Jo Holdsworth
Destination London contemporary painting by Jo Holdsworth inspired by London

2020

About the Item

‘Destination London’ is a stunning recent oil painting by Award Winning artist Jo Holdsworth. Inspired by the view over Westminster Bridge towards Big Ben and Portcullis House, this striking and thought provoking piece includes the silhouetted, elongated figures for which Jo is particularly known, all situated within an iconic London location. The bright red of the London buses as they are pictured driving off into the distance makes this bold painting particularly eye catching. ABOUT JO HOLDSWORTH Jo Holdsworth is inspired by London’s ever-changing urban landscape. Responding to observations made during time spent in the capital, Holdsworth’s paintings draw from the pace and rhythm of everyday life. Born near Manchester into a musical and artistic household, Holdsworth's fascination with the movement and behaviour of crowds stems from the paintings of L.S. Lowry whose work she was introduced to at a young age by Lowry protégé and family friend, Pat Cooke. Other influences include early Twentieth-Century photography as well as the American realist painters George Bellows and Edward Hopper. Holdsworth cites first seeing Paul Strand’s photograph, Wall Street, 1915, as a pivotal moment, confirming to her the role of artist as onlooker.Often depicting transitional places like city squares, high street footpaths and railway stations, Holdsworth is drawn to the individual in the crowd and the relationships between figures and the spaces they occupy. Her paintings combine a modernist approach to form with an almost romantic sensibility, combining a cinematic palette with loose, spontaneous brush work. She interprets the figure in long elongated silhouettes, populating her canvases with these anonymous denizens of modernity, to produce images of the city which capture the shifting moods of urban life. Jo’s work has been on book, album and magazine covers and is enjoyed by collectors throughout the world. Represented by several London galleries and exhibiting widely, including in highly acclaimed solo and group shows, Jo accolades are extensive. She was awarded Royal Arts Prize Visitor’s Choice Award Winner and her joint Award Winners’ Show took place at the Royal Opera Arcade Gallery, Pall Mall, London in March 2020. Jo was one of 30 best selling international artists for the Affordable Art Fair’s summer exhibition in 2021 and featured in their blog called ‘Five Artists You Need to Know’. Her highly successful Solo Show at 60 Threadneedle Street in the City of London in January 2024 was met with rave reviews featuring in the Sunday Times, Evening Standard, City AM, Arts and Collections magazine and FAD magazine. “It’s the mixture of calm beauty and ambiguity throughout all of Jo Holdsworth’s paintings that mesmerises the viewer." London art critic Tabish Khan “Her work evokes, with uncanny semblance, the comings and goings of everyday life. With seemingly effortless brush strokes and a limited colour palette, she crafts an artistic window into quintessentially British scenes". Arts & Collections

Lotus Number Four (Hard Edge Floral Still Life Painting of Lotus Leaves)
By Frank DePietro
Located in Hudson, NY
30 x 24 x 1 inches oil on canvas Inspired by close observations of the natural world and encounters with still moments that give us pause. Lines, shapes and colors encountered in nature, reveal the cycles of decay and regeneration that are life’s constant state of change. The work has a quiet, meditative quality. The subject is portrayed in a manner true to their existence in a specific time and place and selected based on considerations of visual relationships to formal elements of painting. Aspects of photo realism, hard edge and color field techniques are utilized to isolate the uniqueness of the subject’s detail, as well as emphasize flatness and illusion of depth within the two-dimensional space of the painting. About the artist: Frank DiPietro was born and raised in Scranton PA. He received a Bachelor of Art from Bloomsburg University in 1997, majoring in both Painting and Ceramics with a minor in Art History. In 2000 he earned a degree in Art Education from Moore College of Art and Design while continuing his studies in painting. Frank lived in Philadelphia for twelve years painting and teaching at several museums, art centers and schools in the region. In 2010 he and his family moved to Chester County PA, where he currently resides. Frank currently teaches painting classes and workshops at the Delaware Art Museum and Longwood Gardens...
