About the Item

Johan Krouthen was a well-known Swedish artist most noted for his scenes of rural Swedish landscapes oftentimes animated with human figures. Born in the small town of Linköping in southern Sweden, Krouthen began studying art when he was only fourteen years old. He studied with the artist and photographer Svante Rydholm, who taught him anatomy, perspective, and probably the basics of landscape painting. In 1875, Krouthen moved to Stockholm to begin his formal artistic training at the Art Academy there. While at the Academy, he became acquainted with the artists Oscar Bjorck and Anders Zorn who were studying there at the same time. Teaching at the Academy was very conservative during this time; for the first three years at the Academy, students had to study and master the classical principals of form and proportions through the drawing of plaster models only. Krouthen, along with several other students rebelled against the Academy’s rigid teaching philosophies by staging protests outside of the institution. In 1881, the artist decided to travel to Paris where he discovered the avant-garde movements of Impressionism and Naturalism. Impressed and inspired by French modern art, Krouthen decided to focus on landscape painting. Upon returning to Sweden, he began studying with the artist Edvard Perseus who took a modern approach to painting by taking his pupils to various locations to paint on the spot. During the summer of 1883, Krouthen spent time at the Danish artist’s colony of Skagen with the so-called “Skagen painters,” who included Michael Ancher, P.S. Kroyer and Christian Krohg. While there, he executed numerous paintings of the flat deserted landscape bathed in diffuse northern light. Slowly, Krouthen shifted from realism to idealism, focusing more on the beautiful effects of nature just like the French modern artists whom he had encountered back in Paris. Krouthen returned to Linköping in the fall of 1883 where he exhibited widely. His works were met with great acclaim as he won a gold medal at the 1889 Paris Salon. During the 1890s, Krouthen became increasingly well known and although he painted interior scenes and portraits, his outdoor scenes were what won him the most fame. In 1909, he moved his family to Stockholm where he acquired a studio on the famous Valhallvägen Street. Krouhen maintained his old patrons from Linköping, while continuing to work on commission in Stockholm for the rest of his life. A year after his death in 1932, the Gummessons Art Gallery in Stockholm held a memorial exhibition of Krouthen’s works. Today his works can be found in several museums in Sweden, such as the Norrköping Museum of Art and the Konsthall Museum in Göteborg, Sweden. Krouthen is remembered for his ability to depict the powerful effects of light, and the joyous combination of colors, in his landscapes of lush fields, gardens, and quarries and beaches.
