"Over the years, I've spent a lot of time in Florida, which made a lasting impression on me," shares Johansen. She portrays her memories of the beach communities along the state's east coast where happy retirees would spend hours folding aluminum chairs, chatting amidst the palms and palmettos, and grabbing the occasional smoke. She loves to paint their faces, reminding her of their full lives.
