The native Swede John Fabian Carlson became a household name in New York art circles during the early 20th century, training at the Albright School of Art with Lucius Hitchcock and the Art Students League with Frank Vincent DuMond. In 1906, Carlson was instrumental in relocating the League's summer school from Connecticut to Woodstock, New York, where he depicted the still beauty of the surrounding countryside in fine Tonalist landscapes.
In 1911, he received an award at the Swedish-American Exhibition in Chicago and was elected as an Associate member of the National Academy of Design. Soon after, the Art Students League chose him to lead the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. In 1912, the Salmagundi Club gave him the Vezin Prize for his watercolors and honored him with the first Isidor Prize. The next year, Carlson earned a silver medal from the Washington Society of Artists.
In 1915, Carlson won a silver medal at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. In 1918, the National Academy of Design awarded him the Carnegie Prize and the Altman First Prize. The following year, he stepped down from being the director of the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting. In 1920, Carlson started teaching during the summer at the Broadmoor Art Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1922, he established the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting in Woodstock. Three years later, he became a full member of the National Academy of Design.
In 1928, Carlson wrote a teaching book called Elementary Principles of Landscape Painting. This book was printed again in 1953, 1958, 1970, and 1973. Later editions have been titled Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting.
Carlson's paintings are in numerous museum collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Maier Museum of Art, Randolph-Macon Women's College, Lynchburg, Virginia.

Louis H. Barnett, Fort Worth, Texas
In 1905, Gerrit Beneker began his art career as an illustrator. He married Flora Judd, his high school sweetheart from Grand Rapids and they moved to Brooklyn, NY. Gerrit's early passion was to create an art that would inspire and provide honor to the workingman. As such, he had no interest in painting portraits of pretty women, which were so often seen on the magazine covers of the day. Rather he wanted to seek out workingmen on the bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers of NYC, and paint them in their environments. He completed over 150 magazine covers, numerous ads including many for Ivory Soap...

A native of Windham, New Hampshire, upon graduation from high school, Titcomb studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, before accepting a position as a drawing teacher in the public schools of Brockton, Massachusetts, where she remained for fourteen years before resigning, in 1889, to study painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her instructors there included Edmund Charles Tarbell, Philip Leslie Hale, and Frank Weston Benson. In the 1890s she went to Paris to study with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and to travel. She then returned to Boston, taking studio space at the Harcourt Studios, where all three of her teachers kept space. In 1895 she became a member of the Copley Society and began exhibiting locally; from 1904 to 1927 she showed work in 29 exhibits at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She began signing her name as "M. Bradish Titcomb" in 1905 to avoid prejudice against her gender. The same year saw her making a sketching trip to the artists' colony at Old Lyme, Connecticut, a center for the American Impressionists; this trip seems to have cemented her interest in the style.
In 1915, Titcomb's Portrait of Geraldine J. – the mother of actress Jane Russell – was shown at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and purchased by President Woodrow Wilson; another portrait, of Frank P. Sibley, was reproduced in the Boston Globe. During this period her work was shown in a traveling exhibition with that of Cecilia Beaux, Lydia Field Emmet, Jean MacLane...
