John Ford Clymer
Drying Nets - Mont Saint Pierre

1930s

About the Item

Signature: Signed Lower Right Framed Dimensions: 25" X 29 1/4" Drying Nets - Mont Saint Pierre is an antique 1930s signed oil on canvas painting by the important American artist and illustrator John Clymer, signed lower right and titled on the back stretcher bar in the artist's hand. The work is a fine American impressionist painting with dazzling impasto work, particularly on the nets being hoisted and the frothing sea. Showing a rugged scene of two fishermen on the coast of the St Lawrence river in New Brunswick Canada, this appears to date to the 1930s when the artist resided in Connecticut. The painting is housed in a fabulous and original-to-the-painting American Arts & Crafts aesthetic Plein Air carved gold frame. --- John Clymer, renowned for his historic and artistic contribution in documenting the American Frontier, was born in Ellensburg, Washington in 1907. Clymer was fascinated by art at an early age, and began taking art correspondence courses in art during high school. At the age of sixteen, he sold two drawings to the Colt Firearms Company and made his debut as a professional artist. After high school, Clymer moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he worked as an illustrator by day and took night classes at the Vancouver School of Art. During his year in Canada, Clymer became a top illustrator for several leading Canadian magazines. In 1932, Clymer married his high school sweetheart Doris, who would conduct the crucial historical research for his later paintings. The Clymers moved to Westport, Connecticut, a thriving colony for young artists where Clymer learned from American illustration legends like N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) and Harvey Dunn (1884-1952). Clymer's illustrations appeared in Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and American Magazine. During his career as an illustrator, he created over eighty covers for the Saturday Evening Post. Like many successful illustrators, Clymer longed to devote his time to easel painting, and in 1964 committed himself to painting the wildlife and history of the American West. That same year, New York's Grand Central Art Galleries hosted his successful one-man wildlife art exhibition. In 1970, Clymer moved with Doris to Teton Village, Wyoming, where he spent winters in his studio and summers traveling to research and sketch historical sites. Clymer received many honors, including the National Academy of Western Art's 1976 Prix de West Award and the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Rungius Medal in 1988. In 1991, his hometown established the Clymer Museum, which owns eighty of his Saturday Evening Post covers. Upon Clymer's death, his family generously donated the contents of his studio to the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

After relocating to Tempe, his work experienced a significant shift from photo-based paintings of retail interiors to fantastical figurative inventions based on pop culture imagery he has encountered via his two daughters’ taste in music videos, and his proximity to Southern California and it’s particular brand of Disney-esque hedonism. "Sunday Florals" Colorful Impressionist Still Life Scene Oil on Canvas Painting
Located in New York, NY
A charming Still Life Floral scene oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Johanne Schiefer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see a glass vase with simple florals with an abundance of color and life. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a wonderful vintage wood frame and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 16 x 12 inches Frame measures 19.5 x 15.5 inches Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes, still life’s and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at the age of 19 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in art at the Beaux Arts, and later at the Villa Medici in Rome. He traveled to paint across Europe, primarily France and Italy and also Latin America. When he married, he settled down in Nice France, and during the late thirties, he traveled and painted the coastline of the South of France, as well as Venice and the Adriatic. He remained in France until 1942, when he moved to New York with his family after the birth of their daughter, future actress Joanna Miles. Already an artist of stature when he arrived in New York, he settled with his family on Long Island, and for the next 30 years, Schiefer kept on painting and built a solid reputation as an important American artist. The Schiefers also had a son, Johannes Jr. After the war, Schiefer maintained a Paris studio and became a resident of Los Angeles for a time in the 1950s. For the next 30 years Schiefer kept on painting and during his career had numerous one man shows, having exhibitions at: Gallery Zak in Paris; Kunsthaus in Hamburg; Kunsthalle in Munich; Stiebel Galleries in Paris; O'Connor Gallery in Ontario; Museum of Modern Art, Wildenstein & Co, Carol Carstairs Gallery and Schoeneman Galleries in New York City; Esther Robles Gallery, County Museum and Vigoveno Galleries in Los Angeles; and the San Francisco Museum. Like Picasso, Schiefer never permitted himself to be “type-cast” in a single monotonous style. If there is anything that typifies his work, it is his versatility, his deft handling of subdued tones to create a unique brilliance of light and color that stamps every painting with his own individuality. In February 1964, Ethel Kennedy...
