About the Item

Machiavellian Browser depicts a screenshot of some issues black men face in the 21st century. Machiavellianism in psychology refers to a personality trait that sees a person so focused on their own interests they will manipulate, deceive, and exploit others to achieve their goals in this case it’s social groups once closed off to BIPOC in society. Being a Black Man in America living in a Machiavellian society you find yourself at the mercy of others in places of advancement. The loss of black icons has been a bad trend in the year 2020. The helmet of the superhero “Black Panther” serves as a memorial for the actor Chadwick Aaron Boseman who lost his battle to colon cancer. Most analyses showed African Americans (male and females) have a higher risk of cancer of the colon. The mental health survey in the painting includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. African Americans are arrested and roughed up by cops at wildly disproportionate rates, relative to both their overall share of the population and the percentage of crimes they commit. In a majority of cases where an officer commits murder on a person of color regardless of gender, they never face real justice for their actions. Abstracted bullet wounds represent the 7 bullets shot at Jacob Blake (a 29-year-old Wisconsin man) received while his back was turned to officer Rusten Sheskey. The sickle cell disease visually rendered as green, red, blue, and various colored lines is an inherited disorder of the red blood cells, is more common in African Americans in the U.S. compared to other ethnicities occurring in approximately 1 in 365 African Americans. Keys at the bottom represent the gatekeepers to success and opportunities. The definition of a gatekeeper is a person who controls access to something or someone. Cultural gatekeepers inherently limit individuality and tend to smooth out the diversity in cultures. Michael Tole is a figurative painter currently living in Tempe, AZ with his wife and daughters. A Texas native, most of his 20 year long career was spent in Dallas. After relocating to Tempe, his work experienced a significant shift from photo-based paintings of retail interiors to fantastical figurative inventions based on pop culture imagery he has encountered via his two daughters’ taste in music videos, and his proximity to Southern California and it’s particular brand of Disney-esque hedonism. Mr. Tole’s career includes shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and Miami. His work has been reviewed in Art Forum International...
