Crying Clown Portrait in Oil on Canvas
Portrait of a sad clown by San Francisco artist John Peers (American, 1922-2009). This portrait is closely framed on the clown's face, showing detail in the contortions. His lips are bright red, with teal eyebrows that have been exaggerated. There are tears streaming down his face, exaggerated for effect.
Signed "Peers" in the lower left corner.
Presented in a wood frame with a linen liner.

John Swinburne Peers (American, 1922-2009) was primarily known for his clown portraits. He lived and worked in San Francisco, CA, out of a house garage turned studio on 27th Avenue near Balboa Street. His garage window had a hand-painted sign "Paintings By Peers". He would also sell his paintings on the streets near Candlestick Park.
