Jori Duran (January 17, 1929, Lourdes) is a French figurative painter, self-taught artist of great strength and internationally recognized.
She has exhibited in galleries in Spain, France, England, Italy, the United States and Canada, obtaining, among others, the following awards and distinctions:
1962: Silver medal of (Arts, sciences et lettres) -Paris
1967: Gold medal of the city of Bordeaux
1968: New York Grand Prix
1975: Prize of honor of the president of the society of fine arts-Pau
1982: (Diploma of merit) of the Leonardo da Vinci Academy-Rome
1987: Laureate of the (Golden Laurels) of the W.I.Z.O.-Paris
2000: Award of the patron-Salon international de Clairac
Jori Duran is member of the Academy Leonardo da Vinci in Rome, Honorary member of the European Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. In her country she was named Knight of the National Order of Merit, in 1974 she got the 1st Prize of the National competition: "Bordeaux and its Wines" and many other awards and honours.
She has been working as a teacher, book illustrator for the luxury editions “Carrés d'Art” (Paris) and as a restorer of important works of art, such as Francisco de Goya paintings.
The artist said:
“While I devoted myself with passion to the study of the violin, painting suddenly revealed itself to me when I was still very young, by chance of a meeting with an old lady, - Blanche Odin -, wonderful watercolorist , whose talent immediately dazzled me. I then made the difficult decision to try my turn to confront the blank canvas.
Self-taught, the first technique came gradually. Very quickly, a fragmented and somewhat geometric vision took hold of my gaze on everything.
Painting, isn't it seeing differently?
The human in all its aspects remains the heart of my work. No matter how old they are, faces intensely reside in me; hence a figurative painting which transmits the moral or physical beauty of a being, in its integrity.
Color is a feast for the eye; I offer it to the spectators of my painting in order to try to bring them joy and warmth, in times that are sometimes too gray.
Painting is an exciting journey in that nothing is ever perfect and you spend your life pursuing this never-before-achieved perfection.
Maybe this is the secret to some happiness?”

The rich range of colors used and the relaxed gesture of the model envelop the atmosphere of comfort that prevails in the works of this author because, according to his words: “When I use a model I want her to be very comfortable, rested, calm and relaxed. I am not interested in movement in my work, as it always ends up too artificial for my taste and would interfere with the ambiance I am trying to create”.
The flattened perspectives, the fractured surfaces, and the graphic stylizations refer to the cubism of Picasso and Juan Gris. There are echoes of Modigliani in the treatment of his female models and we can detect an homage to Gauguin and Matisse, in his playful and sensual manipulation of color.
In 2003 Ediciones Sammer publishes in a deluxe edition the book Alfredo Roldán written by the sculptor David Gamella where a large part of his work is reproduced. This painting, Raquel, is reproduced on the cover of the book and also inside on a double page (294-295).

Alfredo Roldán (Madrid- Spain, 1965) is a self-taught artist who, at the age of 22, began selling his works at street markets. In 1994 he won the award granted by the City Council of Madrid with the painting “El Baño Azul”, which now hangs in The Museum of Modern Art of Madrid.
