José Benito Ortega
Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by José Benito Ortega

Early 20th Century

About the Item

Antique Orientalist Oil on Board 'Desert Bedouin', by Spanish Artist Ortega Spanish, early 20th Century Frame: Height 51cm, width 59cm, depth 2cm Board: Height 44cm, width 53cm, depth 0.5cm Fluidly painted, this vibrant oil on board depicts a dusty Orientalist scene. Four Bedouin ride camels alongside a flurry of goats, carrying lambs and hens in saddlebags. Other figures clothed in Middle Eastern garments walk with them, and the busy scene fades into a dusty, evening landscape. The colour palette is vibrant and hued with dusky pinks and oranges, giving the impression that these Bedouin are returning back to camp. The cropped composition also gives a dynamic feel to the picture: a glance into early 20th Century desert life. The present painting was created by Spanish artist José Benito Ortega (1877–1955). He studied at the Beaux-Arts Academie in Algiers, likely the place which inspired this work. The painting is signed in red to the lower left 'J. Ortega' and is held in a simple wooden frame with gilt rim.

Natan Heber was trained by his father in Poland to be a ritual slaughterer. In 1925, he joined the Zionist movement "Mizrachi" and in 1936 immigrated to Palestine where he opened a poultry shop in Haifa. He began to paint at the age of sixty-one, after ill health forced him to retire. Driven by a need to memorialize his family and their shtetl community lost in the Holocaust, he drew scenes of traditional Jewish life. Unfamiliar with the conventions of scale and perspective, he set his heavily outlined frontal figures on steeply rising surfaces and often portrayed his father in monumental size to mark his importance. One of Israel's greatest naive-style painters. Along with Shalom of Safed, Kopel Gurwin and Gabriel Cohen, He is renowned as one of Israel's greatest living naive-style folk art painters, The Haifa Museum of Art will be opening the first ever Outsider Art exhibition (also known as Art Brut) in Israel in January 2013.
