JOSÉ MARÍA LÓPEZ MEZQUITA Spanish, 1883 - 1954 DÍA DE MERCADO signed "López Mezquita" (upper left) oil on canvas 37-3/4 x 45-3/4 inches (95.5 x 116 cm.) framed: 46 x 54 inches (117 x 137 cm.) PROVENANCE Collection of Nicolas Florencio Cortes Oliver of Buenos Aires, Argentina José María López Mezquita (Granada, 1883 - Madrid, 1954). He was born in Granada on April 25, 1883, son of a wealthy textile merchant, Atanasio López Robles, and Encarnación Mezquita Vélez. In 1894 he began his first drawing classes with José Larrocha, who introduced him to Cecilio Pla while taking advantage of his visit to Granada. In March 1896 he traveled to Madrid where he visited the Prado Museum and continued his trip to Barcelona. In 1897 he settled permanently in Madrid and entered the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving, attending at the same time the studio of Cecilio Pla. He becomes a member of the Círculo de Bellas Artes and attends live and nude model classes. In 1899 he attended the National Exhibition for the first time, and two years later, at the age of eighteen, he presented himself again with the painting Rope of Prisoners and obtained a gold medal. Pensioned by the Infanta Isabel de Borbón, he went abroad in 1902. He traveled through France, Belgium, Holland and England for several years, residing for four years in Paris, where he had his own studio and attended exhibitions and public competitions. On a trip to London, made at that time, he met the American painter and portraitist John Singer Sargent, with whom he would always maintain a good friendship. In 1903 he participated in the Paris Salon, obtaining a third medal for the painting Rest or La siesta. In 1904 he exhibited The Artist's Mother and Miss Mumford at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, works that mark the beginning of the series of great portraits. He also participated in the Munich Exhibition of that year with the portrait of his mother. In 1905 he returned to Granada. The reunion with the city and with the members of the Artistic Center will prompt him to create one of his great works in the portrait genre: My Friends. He would later exhibit this painting with great success in Paris, Brussels, Munich (where he won a gold medal) and, some time later, in New York. That same year he returned to Madrid and presented eight paintings to the National Exhibition, which he would attend again with six in 1908. In 1910 López Mezquita was awarded gold medals in Buenos Aires, Brussels, Barcelona and at the National Exhibition in Madrid, on this occasion with a splendid portrait of the Bermejillo family. In 1913 he was elected president of the Association of Painters and Sculptors of Spain and official delegate of the Spanish State to the Munich International Exhibition, in which he participated along with the seventy artists that make up the Spanish section. In the following years he will be awarded again at the National Exhibition (1915, second place for the medal of honor awarded to Francisco Domingo), the International Exhibition of San Francisco (1915, silver medal), and the International Exhibition of Panama (1916 , grand prize of honor). Since 1917 he began to dedicate himself to painting portraits. Since the early 1920s, López Mezquita taught painting classes in his studio. In 1925 he entered the Royal Academy of San Fernando, and the following year he held an important exhibition in New York, at the Reinhardt Galleries, sponsored by Alfonso XIII, which later went to Chicago (Anderson Gallery) and Boston (Robert C. Vose Gallery ) composed mostly of portraits. The founder and director of the Hispanic Society, Archer Milton Huntington, takes advantage of López Mezquita's exhibition in New York to get in touch with the artist. He commissions his own portrait and that of his wife, while creating a new gallery in his museum to house a collection of his paintings. Huntington's first assignment is to complete the series of illustrious Spaniards that Sorolla had begun. The second, more important, is that of a gallery of illustrious Hispanic Americans (for two years, López Mezquita will travel through South American republics to portray their respective presidents and personalities of these countries). A third order, even more important, will be the execution of a collection of paintings with "the most outstanding values of our race, types, customs and landscapes of some Spanish regions." He returned to Spain to carry out this work. In 1931 he returned to New York, where, following the great success of the 1926 exhibition, he received many commissions to portray New York high society, intellectuals, scientists, etc. For ten years he lived there with short trips to Spain and some Latin American countries. On July 18, 1936, he surprised him in Madrid. He moved to Valencia with his wife and son, and finally to New York where he would live for much of the post-war period, although also in Havana and Santo Domingo. His return to Spain took place in 1954, shortly before his death, which occurred on December 6 of that same year.
