About the Item
In this small painting I try to enter into the serenity of a private moment of literary contemplation. The work focuses on the essence of the instant, capturing the magic of a woman absorbed in reading while gently rocking. The protagonist, depicted in profile, reveals a relaxed yet concentrated posture. The viewer's attention is drawn to the woman's head and shoulders, highlighting the relaxed expression on her face. The back of the rocking chair, skillfully delineated, reinforces the sensation of gentle movement, creating an atmosphere of tranquility. The sunlight, the protagonist of the scene, floods the painting with warm and soft tones, highlighting the peace of the moment. Born in Madrid, Spain, he pursued Interior Design studies but his aptitude for painting led him to focus on this art form. In 1986, he joined the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, where he spent several years drawing and painting figures from life. In 1989, he became a copyist of Art Works at the National Prado Museum in Madrid, a role he continued for several more years. He took painting courses with Daniel Quintero and Eduardo Úrculo, and engraving courses at the National Mint of Madrid with José Hernández, Daniel Gil, Paco Mora, and Luis Cabrera. He has held solo and group exhibitions in various national and international galleries. He has been selected for numerous national competitions and has won several awards, including the 2nd Prize at the Caballeros de Yuste, finalist in the VIII Laura Otero, Honorary Medal at Sotillo de la Adrada, 5th Prize at the XVIII Antequera in Málaga, Honorary Medal at the XXII López-Villaseñor, XLII Antonio López Painting and Drawing Competition in Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, and First Prize in Small Format Painting at AGORA96 in Cádiz. He was a finalist in the Ynglada-Guillot Foundation Drawing Competition in Barcelona. His most recent selections include Daimiel and Virgen de las Viñas 2022, Laura Otero (finalist), and Valdepeñas 2023. In 2018, he was selected to exhibit at the Art Revolution Taipei International Art Fair and at the X-Power Gallery in Taipei.

A young girl sits at a park on a late summer's day in August, lost in a story of a compelling book. The strong afternoon sunlight highlights her hair and back. "I saw this girl sitting by the reflecting pool in Washington, DC", shares artist Faye Vander Veer. "I wanted the painting to be about her, so I obscured surrounding details and kept the brushwork loose. What was her story, what was she reading?”
About the Artist
Artist Faye Vander Veer seeks out moments with engaging narratives and captures them with an impressionist style. She describes herself as an observer of people living their day-to-day lives. Her goal is to offer viewers a look into her sensory memory while also prompting the beginning of a story. Faye always keeps her camera by her side, ready to capture reference material. "For me, each painting is an opportunity to explore my emotional reactions to the color and light I observe," says Faye. She enjoys being in her glass-walled studio surrounded by nature to inspire her creative process. When she is not putting paint on canvas, Faye can be found in nature, journaling or writing poetry. Her artwork has been showcased in both American Art Collector and Art of the West magazines.
