Figurative paintings of a woman viewing a painting by Paul Gauguin at the Chicago Art Institute "Gauguin's Girl", painted by Judith Wyer, in 2018 oil on wood panel 10 x 14 inches with a slim natural wood frame Artist signature, verso This figurative painting was made by Connecticut based artist, Judith Wyer, in 2018. The painting features an interior view of the Chicago Art Institute. The scene pictures a woman standing away from the viewer while she gazes at a painting by Paul Gauguin. A museum attendant is seen looking at the women from afar. The warm yellow walls of museum offers beautiful light and contrast to the scene. The painting is complemented with a slim natural wood frame. Artist's statement about the painting: Gauguin's Girl began with an image from the Chicago Art Institute with different foreground figures. I replaced them with a solitary woman in black. The loose depiction of Gauguin's portrait of the Tahitian girl, Tehamana, and Guard in the background are all the remain of the original. Tehemana was a 13 year old girl with whom the middle-aged Gauguin had a sexual relationship. Artist Statement: Making a painting is a journey with an unknown destination.. In this respect, I consider my process much like a writer where the narrative seems to develop itself. The relationship of the word and the image is crucial. My work often begins with a photograph of a captivating image, a fleeting moment of everyday existence. From this I begin the process of developing the narrative which most often requires numerous edits and lengthy periods of just looking at the work and not touching it. This can take years. The work and I grow together which hopefully yields a provocative and intimate elucidation of the human condition. Once I arrive on a title, which is almost never at the outset, everything comes into sharper focus and the work's form and meaning come into closer agreement. . In fact, I never consider a piece finished. The challenge of one piece informs the next which sometimes leads to resurrecting an incomplete piece from the past. My attic is full of such unfinished works.The words of Diego Velazquez continue to guide me, "Es Verdad, No Pintura." Artist Resume: Judith Wyer is an artist based in Connecticut.
