Oil on canvas
"Do you know whose work has made a deep impression on me? [...] Julien Dupré. They seemed to me outstanding, very energetic and very true to life." –Vincent van Gogh, 1882
Julien Dupré's luminous canvases transported his viewers from the chaotic streets of the rapidly modernizing Paris to the peaceful French countryside. In this monumental masterpiece, entitled Haymaking, the artist perfectly captures his signature subject—the heroic dignity of rural laborers—at an extraordinary scale.
Standing over 6 1/2 feet high, Haymaking is one of the largest paintings the artist ever made. Its immense size and radiant palette would have made a bold impact when it was exhibited in Pittsburgh at the Carnegie Institute’s 12th Annual Exhibition in 1908. Artists often saved their best works for these important exhibitions, and Haymaking is no exception.
The extraordinary scale invites the viewer to step into the field where the workers gather hay—the sun bathing the composition in a glowing warmth. One can almost feel the atmosphere, an exceptional quality that earned Dupré his international reputation. Vincent van Gogh himself admired Dupré’s outstanding talent, calling his work in the 1881 Paris Salon “very energetic and very true to life.” Like van Gogh, Dupré rejected the convention of painting urban subjects, choosing instead to capture the dignity and authenticity of agrarian life.
Born in 1851, Dupré received his artistic training in the academic studios of renowned artists Isidore Pils, Henri Lehmann and Desire-Francois Laugée. He exhibited his first work at the Paris Salon in 1876, and he would show there every year until his death in 1910. By the early 1880s, Dupré was an international success—he sold his work through the most important galleries worldwide, including Knoedler Gallery in New York and Goupil & Cie in Paris, managed at the time by Vincent’s brother Theo van Gogh. He was also selected for the most prestigious international exhibitions, winning a medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle.
In 1892, Dupré was awarded the highest civilian honor in France when he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Today, very few of his monumental works like Haymaking ever appear on the market, and even his works in prestigious museum collections—including the Musée d’Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—do not come close to the scale and beauty of this work.

Julien Dupré
Julien Dupré was considered by most to be one of the leading exponents of the second generation of Realist painters; a group that also includes Leon Lhermitte, Jules Bastien-Lepage and Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret. Like J.F. Millet and J. Breton, before them, these artists devoted their artistic careers to the depiction of the toils of the French peasant - often seen hard at work in the fields. He exhibited his first painting at the Paris Salon in 1876 and became a regular exhibitor until his death in 1910. In 1880 he was awarded a third-class medal for Faucheurs de Luzerne, and in 1881 he received a second-class medal for his La Recolte des Foins. He was honored with a gold medal at the Paris Fair of 1889 and in 1892 was awarded the Legion of Honor. His work was sought after internationally, and he found a good market in the United States.

La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
By Georges d'Espagnat
Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work.
Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants.
By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...

Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)
By André Hambourg
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky.
The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized.
Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. It was such a large and important gift that the collection bears...
