About the Item

Represented by George Billis Gallery. Katie Riesco is a classically trained artist & painter who lives and works in Fairfield, Connecticut. With her contemporary artwork, Riesco strives to explore figurative & abstract expression. Her figurative work, which embodies a very loose abstract nature, is an exploration in illuminating the past. Working from vintage photographs that she feels capture the essence of a femininity long past, Riesco attempts to bring the ethos of these people into our hectic modern times. Her paintings can be seen as an antidote to the harshness found in the contemporary world around us. Yet this reverence of the past gives her work a nostalgia & longing of a different world. What happened to romance and innocence? This is the question that Riesco’s work tries to grapple with. Through her exploration of this topic, the viewer feels the subtle peace of a bygone era whose trials and tribulations are long forgotten. Riesco’s paintings give us a peaceful window into the lives of vintage everyday heroines.

Swimming Pool Fun, Acrylic on Canvas, Red, Blue, by Indian Artist "In Stock"
By Farhad Hussain
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Farhad Hussain - Swimming Pool Fun - 15 x 15 inches (unframed size) Acrylic on Canvas, 2020 Inclusive of shipment in roll form. Style: Farhad Hussain's colourful work that includes drawings and watercolours besides paintings on canvas, features day to day visual experiences of middle-class urban India. He endows his narrative with iconography and personality through his figuration, their posturing, dress and the surrounding imagery. The drama of subtle complexities of human relationships and social environment are grounded with a sense of satire mixed with pathos. Farhad’s colours help enhance the brightness and aura of his paintings while he also partakes elements from traditions such as the formulaic textile patterns of Indian miniatures. His compositions are often set in a familiar drawing room or a social space, playing out with humour and sarcasm, the narrative psychologies of human life and encounters at various levels. This young artist who has also experimented with sculpture has already carved a niche and an instantly recognizable individualistic style befitting his aesthetics and concerns. Farhad has chosen to use tempera on cloth for his works, the media allowing him to achieve the desired vibrancy of colours. A slow build-up of images and spontaneous flow of colour while balancing colour and composition simultaneously follow structured formatting. This meticulous planning in the composition and layout is the beginning of a process from where onwards it is very spontaneous and intuitive. Another technique used throughout Farhad’s work is the method of applying the colour: dot-by-dot till the entire area is completely covered. Various elements from miniature paintings, Kalighat paintings, Japanese prints and images from mass media are scrutinized, transformed and transferred on to the surface through the artists own style of expression. Untitled, Acrylic on Canvas, Blue, White Contemporary Indian Artist “In Stock”
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
Rahim Mirza - Untitled Acrylic on Canvas, 18 x 18 inches (unframed size) Born in 1969, Rahim Mirza completed his art education at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, where he studied printmaking. Mirza’s current body of work however, is largely made up of acrylics on canvas. The leaf occupies a central motif in much of his work, representing, perhaps, a multiplicity of emotions; while the appearance of the first leaf signifies Spring and renewal, the shedding of the brown leaves in Autumn heralds the onset of winter. It is these subtleties and the complexity of the simple motif that intrigue the artist. While Mirza focuses on the leaf, he chooses to remove it from its natural environment. Thus while the leaf is a prominent symbol in his work, there generally is no sign of a tree or any context beyond its form. In its multiplicity, the artist creates rhythm and meaning that is far beyond its reach. Mirza had his first solo exhibition at Crimson Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2000. This was followed by others at Archer Art Gallery, Ahmedabad, in 2001; and Diara art Gallery in 2002. His work has also been a part of group shows like 'Collective Spaces' at M.E.C. Art Gallery, New Delhi...
