About the Item

Erica #1, 2018 Hand embellished monoprint on canvas 25 3/5 × 21 7/10 in 65 × 55 cm Sophia’s Safehouse in an Uncanny Valley examines the recent celebrity culture of humanoid AI as a way to better understand humanity, authenticity, identity, and memory in the early 21st century. The installation, inspired in part by the dystopian literary works of George Orwell, Mary Shelley, Philip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, as well as other pulp science fiction in general is a compelling response to recent societal events and draws attention to the accelerated technological progress in the world today. As our civilization approaches singularity as defined by Ray Kurzweil, which, inevitably will guide humanity ever closer to an unabridged understanding of biology, consciousness and the universe, its the paradoxical situation of existence that intelligent lifeforms will need to come to terms with together. Lee Wells (b.1971) is a conceptual artist and writer whose work ranges from painting, drawing and photography, to video and new media, His work primarily focuses on systems of power and control in society and has been presented internationally for over 20 years. Venues include the Guggenheim Museum, PS1 MoMA, NCCA Moscow, 51st Venice Biennale, in addition to numerous universities, festivals, art fairs, and galleries. Wells was a co-founder of The Perpetual Art Machine, the video art community portal project (2006-2011), and founder of the alternative curatorial platform IFAC Arts which began in 1996. Wells splits his time between New York City, Athens and most recently London through an ongoing collaboration with Darling Pearls & Co.

Abrica
By René Romero Schuler
Located in Westport, CT
René Romero Schuler’s expressionistic paintings depict delicate female figures that she paints using a dry-brushed, minimalist hand, leaving her subjects mostly featureless but nonetheless imbued with emotional interiority. While some of her subjects appear lost and isolated, other works depict couples holding hands in private moments of bliss. Her powerful images speak to the complexities of the human condition and the spirit that connects all human beings. Schuler’s paintings and sculptures are purposely semi-abstract and textured, rendering them open to interpretation by the viewer. Their power lies in the layers of applied materials scraped, carved and incised by hand and the elusive quality of the figures – wholistically beautiful but symbolic of the scars and flaws that shape individuals. Schuler has exhibited in Paris, Rome, Miami, and Chicago, and her works are in the collections of the Union League Club of Chicago, the Loyola University Museum of Art, Grand Valley State University in Michigan, the Coral...
