About the Item

The "Follow the Leader" series started out with the name of the game. I had no idea how extensive the meaning of the game might be. I always worked on the assumption that children's games were metaphors for adult games. That, as grownups, we continued the same games at apparently a more mature level, though I have some questions about that. Remember, March, 2016 was the beginning of the political campaign and every politician on all sides of all issues were telling everybody what they ought to do. So the idea of "Follow the Leader" had a political implication. The idea was the Republicans were telling you what to do and the Democrats were telling you what to do and the government itself was telling you what to do. Everybody was trying to be a leader and was looking for followers. And a very important aspect was that everybody was counting followers. How many people followed who. That was the initial idea. It was political. But then I began to think about it. Remember, the idea of the game came before I began to realize all the possible meanings that it might have. Which was a very provocative idea. The idea was very fertile. What are all the other issues where it was important to follow the leader? I began to think of being on the job. You always had a boss who was telling you what to do and you had to be a follower or you'd lose your job. So that was another aspect of follow the leader. And then I thought of in school. You had the teachers and then you had the students. And the students were telling you what to do as much as the teachers were. Then after the job and school, it was family. As a father, in a sense, I was supposed to be a leader. It was always a matter of somebody having an idea that was supposed to be important to somebody else and who followed who. So that's where it went. -Leopold Segedin Leopold Segedin Follow the Leader V mixed media on panel 12h x 18w in 30.48h x 45.72w cm FRAMED DIMENSIONS 20h x 26w in 50.80h x 66.04w cm LES003
