About the Item

The scale of this dynamic party painting by Leroy Foster (1925-1993) makes you feel like you are in the room with a cocktail in hand. He was an accomplished muralist, so it is no surprise that he has expertly pulled off this crowded and exuberant scene. A composite of detailed portraits among the abstracted crowd is supposedly a holiday party among his friends. Also a self-portrait, Foster is the center figure with his arms outstretched. The painting is signed in the lower right corner In Memory of "No" 9 and LeRoy '54. LeRoy Foster (1925–1993) was an African-American painter from Detroit, Michigan. He is best known for the large murals he painted on the walls of Detroit institutions, such as “The Life & Times of Frederick Douglass, at the Detroit Public Library’s Frederick Douglass Branch, and Renaissance City, at Cass Technical High School. Foster was born in Detroit and lived there his entire life, except for a brief time when he studied art in Europe in the 1940s. In 1939, at age 14, he won first prize at an exhibition of the Pen and Palette Club, a training and studio space for black artists sponsored by the Detroit Urban League, and was the youngest member. He studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts (now the College for Creative Studies), where he studied under painter Sarkis Sarkisian. After that, Foster spent time studying in Europe, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. He had a significant impact on the arts in Detroit, both in his skill in depicting African American history and in his fostering a generation of younger artists. The parties that he threw at his studio were widely attended and talked about.
