About

Die Partei 40 x 50 cm oil on canvas 2017 A wide, apparently endless plain forms the background of the events: out of nowhere, dark figures enter the scenery, as if coming from the depths of the canvas, appearing through layers of bright, shiny white or misty grey paint whose subtle nuances leave much room for their presence and their story. Leszek Skurski, who was born in Poland and educated at the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts, repeatedly dedicates himself to figurative tales in his monochrome paintings . In doing so, the artist unfolds many small and elaborate stories, which remain open-ended in many aspects. His paintings display interludes, interruptions and sudden pauses in freeze-frame poses half-way through movements, which he manages to capture in concentrated form and narrative density. Various fleeting moments of life or togetherness are depicted on canvas, resembling episodes from a sequence or snapshots taken between their appearance and disappearance. The human being is depicted continuously and forms the very centre of Skurski's works, in the early days as well as today. Nowadays these are reduced to their essential qualities, to almost infinitely small, black silhouettes in expressive poses and gestures, stripped off their original surroundings, and placed in a fragmented environment frequently reduced to non-figurative surfaces of brightly accentuated paint spreading across the canvas. As the sum of all colours of light, white increasingly gains importance and space in Skurski’s paintings. Open to manifold projections, white functions in very complex ways since it does not only embody emptiness, tranquillity and silence but also symbolizes spirituality, elusiveness, the unknown, the unexplored – something invisible, the absence of something which sensitises our ways of perception and refers to the things which are present. The figures enter the stage of life in stark contrasts between light and dark, together alone, isolated from the others and in intense connection with each other. Leszek Skurski’s scenes reflect something obviously visible, thus leaving much space for the invisible. The stories of the artist, who lives and works in Germany, seem taken from a different time or a far-off country, but also disconnected from any time or place or context.
