About the Item
Chambers transforms the pastoral into the extraordinary. Long before she puts paint to a canvas, her artistic
process begins with the simple act of paying attention. From the outside looking in, she observes often overlooked
aspects of life to discover an otherwise unseen beauty in the ordinary.
Her paintings are vibrant compositions of color. She works in two distinct palettes, one bright the other subdued,
each containing an incredible diversity of hue and value. Her insistence on variety furthers the idea that everything
contains its own unique beauty, if only you stop to notice. Chambers skillfully uses lines and shapes to both break
up the vibrancy of the canvas and to imbue her compositions with a narrative power. The line work introduces a
tension to the color as the objects of her focus appear to pop and the details of each scene defiantly catch the
viewer’s impatient eye. It is in this way that her paintings elevate above mere depiction to offer a lesson in the
observation of art.
Each painting has strong elements of abstract and impressionist techniques, as well as drawn forms that are
cartoon like in character. The blend of the two adds dimension to the flat surface and provides visual anchors in
the midst of the cacophony of color.
Based in Belleville, Texas, Chambers is a “Texas Big 10 for Art” prize winner at KCAM, a recipient of the “Silver
Award” from Art Forward, and the “Alexander Rutsch Painting Award” from the Pelham Art Center.
Chambers’ art has been featured in numerous shows in galleries across the United States, including Houston,
Lexington, Palm Beach, and New York. Select exhibitions include The Grace Museum in Abilene, the Dairy Arts
Center in Boulder, Colorado, the McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas, Texas, the Fort Worth Community
Arts Center in Fort Worth, Texas, the Lawndale Art Center in Houston, Texas and the Pelham Art Center in New
York.

Elizabeth Higgins (Canadian, b. 1960)
Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design that drives her work.
Higgins’ paintings are rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, and the Canadian Group of Seven (also known as the Algonquin School of landscape painters, 1920–1933). She is influenced by the work of her artist-teachers Paul Resika—himself a student of Hans Hofmann—and Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), as well as the paintings of contemporary artist Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum.
It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting—of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…”
Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena...

A Pompeian Lady

A Pompeian Lady
Signed and dated "J.W. Godward 1904" (lower right, partially covered by frame)
Oil on canvas
One of the last and greatest Victorian neoclassical painters, John William Godward is celebrated for his flawlessly executed images of graceful women posed in idealized ancient settings. In this work, entitled A Pompeian Lady, a classical beauty is caught idling in a moment of quiet, solitary reflection. Godward's elegant subjects are depicted with a degree of technical mastery that remains unsurpassed, and the work's dramatic palette, luxurious fabrics and classical vision are all characteristics of his unique take on the neoclassical style.
Godward was unmatched in terms of his technical skill and attention to detail. A master of contrasting textures, he paints a diaphanous gown draping against the model’s smooth, milky white skin, which sits against the painstakingly rendered individual hairs of a tiger’s pel. Scintillating color permeates the canvas as well, energizing the otherwise static scene. Each element is given careful attention, and the overall effect is one of both immaculate technique and sensual tactility.
Along with his contemporary and mentor, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Godward set the tone for the Victorian neoclassicist movement. He built his career upon creating images of idealized feminine beauty infused with a Greco-Roman-inspired style. Though greatly influenced by Alma-Tadema, Godward distinguished himself through his predilection for the solitary female figure. His fame rose dramatically in the first few years of the 20th century, when the present work was completed, due to the burgeoning strength of the British Empire and the Victorian society’s preoccupation with ancient Rome. To many of the newly affluent, Roman society was, as Iain Gale writes, “a flawless mirror of their own immaculate world.” The sensuality and mystery of Godward’s maidens, combined with his impressive antique backdrops...
