About the Item
The concept originated from the acquisition of a bank draft register from the 1920s. The text sheets reflect that era of economic prosperity before the Great Depression and the subsequent millions of people who fell into debt and poverty.
Initially, the central figures were depicted in shackles and chains, but I later decided that an orange jumpsuit would be a more contemporary reference to financial “imprisonment.”
The bold, heavy outline and vibrant fluorescent colors used for the central figures draw the viewer’s attention and create a striking contrast to the neutrals I used in the backgrounds.
I intended these pieces to serve as a cautionary tale, urging viewers to avoid the pitfalls of credit and the enslavement of consumerism. By presenting the apparent abduction of the male character while the female helplessly watches. At that time, women weren’t able to secure financial freedom without a male guarantee. I challenge viewers to confront their own comfort levels and financial experiences with this work.
Mixed media, abstraction, and the human form are three artistic elements that I’ve explored separately but now integrated in these two pieces.
