26 1/2 x 27 1/4 inches
Since 1979, Holley has dedicated his life to the realm of improvisational creativity. His artistic expressions and musical works, emerging from adversity and challenges, but even more so from a relentless curiosity and innate need, have taken form in various mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, music, and filmmaking. Holley’s sculptures are crafted from found objects, reflecting the ancient traditions of African American sculpture. These items, already rich in cultural and artistic significance, are integrated into narrative sculptures that honor significant places, individuals, and events. His creations are housed in major museum collections globally, including the Museums of Fine Arts in San Francisco, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, among others, are on permanent display at the United Nations, and have been showcased in the White House Rose Garden.
Holley did not begin his journey in music and performance within a traditional studio, nor does his creative approach resemble that of the average musician. His music and lyrics are spontaneously created and adapt continuously with each performance, concert, and recording session. Within Holley’s unique artistic environment, he would assemble and dismantle his visual creations, repurposing their components for new artworks. This often resulted in the transference of distinct narratives into the new pieces, forming a layered composite image that carries greater significance than its initial singular interpretation. The rich soundscapes in Holley’s music are also derived from years of ongoing experimentation.
Holley has put out five critically acclaimed albums—Just Before Music in 2012, Keeping a Record of It in 2013, MITH in 2018, National Freedom in 2020, and Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection (with Matthew E. White) in 2021. His sixth album, Oh Me Oh My, produced by Jacknife Lee, featuring collaborations with Bon Iver, Michael Stipe of R. E. M., Moor Mother, Sharon Van Etten, and Rokia Koné, is set for release on March 10, 2023, under Jagjaguwar.
He has performed extensively across the United States, Europe, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand, sharing stages with Bon Iver, Animal Collective, Deerhunter, Bill Callahan, Saul Williams, Tinariwen, Daniel Lanois, and many others.
Throughout his career, he has also explored film, photography, and video. His directorial debut, the short narrative film I Snuck Off the Slave Ship, premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
In 2022, Holley received recognition as a USA Artist Fellow. He continues to create art and music from his home and studio in Atlanta, Georgia.

The thematic expression of this art piece was crafted from the experience of what women especially wives and mothers had to go through to ensure that their homes were sustained. This art piece tends to inform her female audience; most especially intending wives and mothers that what keeps the home is not primarily in the acquisition of degrees and certifications but in having the requisite knowledge and consciously fulfilling their role as home builders.
