When Louis Icart returned to Paris after his service in the infantry in the Great War of 1914-18 the art and fashion world were about to effervesce into the accute stylishness of art deco. Icart was to become one of those artists, and he was already much influenced by the profession of fashion design, who would both picture the era and in doing so would make his own contribution to its distinctive visual style.
Louis was born in 1880 in Toulouse, Southern France. His father was a banker and wished him to follow in his footsteps, but Louis became increasingly fascinated by the arts, initially with a love of the theatre. In 1907 he made the move to Paris where he developed his skills in fine art, through drawing and painting and also through learning print making. This latter medium was to become tremendously important for Icart’s career. His etchings became increasingly popular in Europe and the USA giving him an iconic status in respect to the art deco era, a status that remains to this day.
His active participation in the creation of fashion design married well with his increasingly independent expression of the female figure, absolutely the source of his inspiration and the main subject of his art. The clothes often play an important part in the composition, whether his model is fully clothed or, as sometimes later in his career, less so, and even when the apparel is scanty – style is the essence; and the style was art deco. So, for Icart, these factors converge: his love of drawing, of the female form, of fashion in feminine clothing, and most opportune for the expression of these, this onset of the art deco period with its huge flair, its innovation in clothes for women and its eroticism.
Icart was stylistically an independent figure, but had his influences, notably the French Roccoco painters, Watteau, Fragonnard and Boucher. These are artists who had aims and preoccupations similar to his own: the female subject, her clothes, beauty and style, though, of course, manifesting in a style of a previous era.
Louis lived in New York for a period in the 1920s where he also achieved considerable professional success. In 1914 he had married Fanny Volmers a beautiful and lively eighteen year old, often a model for the figure in his pictures. It was a marriage that lasted. He died in Paris in 1950. His pictures, particularly his etchings, which he used to colour individually by hand, remain very evident in the art world and as formost examples of the artistic style of the period.

Louis Icart
Louis Icart is considered to be a symbol of the Art Deco movement through his brilliant sketches and prints.
Born in 1888 in Toulouse, France, Icart’s interest in art began at an early age. He was particularly drawn to fashion sketches and designs during the period when the fashion industry was undergoing a revolution from conservative 19th-century designs to the clingy simplicity of the early 20th century.
Icart worked in major fashion studios where his "L.I." initials on women’s clothing were highly regarded. While fighting in World War I, he continued to sketch on every available surface to ward off the anguish and agony of the war. He moved to Paris after the war to concentrate on painting and produced beautiful etchings. Icart’s prints were elaborate aquatints and drypoints done with great skill. They often portrayed women in sensual, erotic poses with an implication of direct sexuality.
By the 1920s, the Art Deco movement had gained great popularity in Paris, France. Icart’s etchings and paintings, though largely influenced by Impressionists such as Claude Monet, were synonymous with the Art Deco era. His drawings also reflected the brilliance of Symbolists such as Gustave Moreau; however, Icart preferred not to be identified with artistic movements.
Icart’s financial and artistic success came in the late 1920s. His work was featured in fashion publications and design studios in Europe and the United States. His immensely popular images, which were considered phenomenal by 1925, included Laziness and Spilled Milk. Icart died on December 20, 1950, at his home in Montmartre, France.

It is signed on the middle right on the wooden window.
This is a stunning painting of a racehorse signed and dated J F Herring Sen 1842. The horse is named above the water trough as Attilla. As Herring was a renowned painter of racehorses it is likely that this was done for a wealthy patron who owned several. Although he painted many of the winners of the St. Ledger Cup Attilla was not one of these.

A sporting painter, born in Surrey of American/Dutch extraction. At first he was a sign and coach painter. He then worked as a stable boy and coachman in Yorkshire until with the help of patrons he was able to study with Abraham Cooper RA, the only art education he appears to have had.
He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’. He sometimes collaborated with his three sons, J.F.Jnr, Benjamin Jnr and Charles. He also collaborated with James Pollard on a number of racing scenes inc. ‘The Doncaster Gold Cup’, 1838, ‘The Emperor of Russia’s Cup at Ascot’ 1845 and ‘The Dead Heat for the Doncaster Great St. Ledger’ 1849
Herring painted 33 successive winners of the St. Ledger and not surprisingly lived a large part of his life in the Doncaster area before settling in Newmarket in 1830 and then in London in 1835. He suffered serious financial difficulties after his move to London which, thanks to a great friend and patron William Taylor Copeland (1797 – 1868) head of the Spode Porcelain factory at Stoke on Trent, was resolved.
