Inscribed lower left, 'Jambor' for Louis Jambor (Hungarian-American, 1884-1955) and painted circa 1925.

Born in Hungary, Jambor's artistic talents were recognized at a young age and the government provided him with a five year scholarship to attend Budapest's Royal Academy. Upon graduation, he spent several years studying Renaissance religious art in Italy and, subsequently, under Frank Gebhard in Dusseldorf. The recipient of numerous awards and prizes, Jambor was elected as a full member of the Royal Academy of the Society of Art before moving to the United States in 1923.
In America, Jambor's professional career flourished. He painted dozens of murals in private homes, public buildings, and churches, including twenty-six for the Hotel New Yorker as well as large panels above the proscenium in the Atlantic City Municipal Auditorium, murals for St. Theresa's in Providence, Rhode Island, and for the Sister's of Mercy Chapel in Marion, Pennsylvania. Jambor also was commissioned to create portraits of public figures including Father Francis Duffy (for whom New York's Duffy Square is named), Clarence Barbour, Lord Rothermere of London, and the canonized saint Mother Cabrini. He was also a noted book illustrator who contributed to numerous Louis May Alcott's 'Little Women' (1947) and 'Jo's Boys' (1949) among other works. Over the course of a long career, Louis Jambor exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. He was a member of the American Artists Professional League, the Allied Artists of America and Audubon Artists. This charming genre scene from the artist's New York period happily retains its period carved and gessoed giltwood frame.
