About the Item

Signed lower right 'Spazzali' for Luciano Spazzali (Italian, 1911-1997) and dated 1958. A complex and lyrical equestrian work by this notable Italian Modernist and exponent of Magical Realism. Luciano Spazzali first studied at the Academy of Art in Bologna from 1932 to 1937 under Giorgio Morandi. Spazzali first exhibited his work in 1951 when he was awarded both the Biennale Internazionale d’Arte in Genoa and the National Painting Prize. Over his career, Luciano Spazzali was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including the Marzotto prize in 1953, the Michetti prize in 1953, 1958 and 1959, and the four year Roman award stipend in 1965. We are pleased to offer this lyrical example of the artist's work.

    Signed lower right, 'Anton Sipos' (Bosnian-American, born 1938) and dated 1974. A very substantial Impressionist oil painting showing a view of two young women relaxing in a sunny garden with a peacock and a peahen. Born in Bosnia, Anton Sipos began drawing at an early age and left home in his teens to work as a film animation artist. He achieved immediate success with his first work, "Surrogate", which won an Academy Award for best-animated short subject under the direction of Yugoslav animator Dushon VuKotic. In 1964, Sipos moved to Montmartre to study at the École de Paris. During this early period, Sipos exhibited widely and with success including at the Salon d'Automne and Le Salon d'Artistes Françaises. While in France, he made numerous painting trips to Provence, Giverny, Rouen and the Cote d'Azur as well as to Italy. In 1970, Sipos arrived in California where he painted landscapes of Los Angeles and marine scenes of the harbor in San Diego.
