About the Item

Oil painting on canvas ( 43 x 53.5 cm; with 59 x 70 cm with gilt wood frame), Title: King Amulius, in the presence of Rea Silvia, orders to kill Romulus and Remus as children Ancient inscription on the frame: "Ademollo" Most recent inscription on the frame: "Rea Silvia" is a very rare example of an oil on canvas by painter Luigi Ademollo that has come down to the present day. In the first book of Ab Urbe Condita Titus Livy relates that Ascanius, son of Aeneas, founded the city of Alba Longa on the right bank of the Tiber. Here, over the centuries, many of his descendants reigned, until Numitore and his younger brother Amulius, sons of King Proca, came to power. Having ousted Numitore, Amulius killed all his male descendants during a hunting party and forced Rhea Silvia, Numitore's only daughter, to become a vestal, so as to prevent her, having to vow to the chastity prescribed for Vesta's priestesses, from having an offspring who could settle her kingdom and claim the crown. Later Mars fell in love with Rea Silva and possessed her, making her the mother of twins-Romulus and Remus. Noticing the offspring, Amulius raided Vesta's temple and ordered his people to kill the two infants by drowning them. But fate had arranged a different and brighter fate for the two children. The soldiers, in fact, moved by pity, spared Romulus and Remus and abandoned them in a basket along the Tiber, from which they were later rescued by the she-wolf.
