Misure con la cornice: 87 x 69 cm La tempera ademolliana, databile all’incirca fra il primo ed il terzo decennio del XIX secolo, illustra due episodi bellici e morali estratti dalla vita del condottiero di Beozia, il tebano Pelopida, la cui biografia è inserita nel testo greco plutarcheo delle Vite parallele, così tanto in voga nel milieu culturale settecentesco, come summa di valori etici e morali. L’episodio centrale a colori rappresenta l’incontro degli stati greci a Susa alla corte del re persiano Artaserse, cui partecipò come ambasciatore anche Pelopida per chiedere il disarmo della flotta ateniese ma senza successo. Ademollo cita erroneamente nella didascalia Serse I, padre di Artaserse, riferendo però correttamente l’episodio la cui fonte per l’artista è con grande certezza il capitolo XXX della vita di Pelopida in Plutarco Il secondo episodio, dipinto nel fregio a grisaglia in basso, rappresenta invece la scena descritta da Plutarco nel capitolo XXXIV in cui il corpo esanime di Pelopida viene ricondotto dagli alleati di Tessaglia in patria dopo lo scontro degli eserciti tessalo-tebano con quello ateniese-spartano nella battaglia di Mantinea del 362 a.C. estratto dall'expertise della dottoressa Egle Radogna
