About the Item

Markus Huemer (*1968 in Linz, Austria, lives in Berlin) studied painting at the University of Art and Design in Linz and at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf. He had institutional solo-exhibitions – amongst other places – in Hannover (Sprengel Museum, 2019); Bratislava (Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum, 2018); Prague (DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, 2009), Vienna (MUMOK Museum Moderner Kunst, 2007); Wiesbaden (Nassauischer Kunstverein, 1998). He will have solo-exhibitions in Berlin (Czech Center, 2020; Haus am Waldsee, 2021). His works have been collected by – amongst others – the Leinemann Foundation, Berlin; the Collection of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn; the Sprengel Museum, Hannover; the Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe; the Daimler Art Collection, Stuttgart; the MUMOK, Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna. During his studies he came in contact with media art through the festival Ars Electronica, later also through a scholarship at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. Huemer works with the media of painting and drawing and creates also interactive installations, environments or computer animations. He problematizes and analyzes digital media in the context of classical art, by using art and media history. Knowing that painted worlds, as well as digitally depicted worlds, are imagined and completely artificial, Huemer develops series of works to examine the problem and construction of reality and its perception. In order to do so, he – often – uses multiple digital sources for each painting. Thus, we seem to see something that we believe to recognize – at first sight. However, once we look closer, we understand that we do not understand (anything). Because what we see is not a logical, plausible space, nor history, but an image for which rather a large group of digital images have been sewn together, than an image that depicts any kind of analogue reality. Together with that come titles that do not have any relation with what has been (seemingly) depicted. So, for instance, in the case of “WYSIWYGEditorenHTMLA“, Huemer refers to the world of the computer and its programs – a world that we do not see painted. We rather see – or believe that we see – the outlines of a plant in front of a black and grey background. This plant has been appropriated from the famous Renaissance scientist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian. In the 17th century she collected insects and plants, in order to research and depict them (with colored etchings that were published and distributed in albums). She had an approach to science and research that was very much connected to the empirical knowledge of things. Now, for the series that use her widely published images, Huemer takes her etchings and blurs them, turns them into something that withholds knowledge and insight. Formally, he creates arbitrary fields in his paintings between different layers of colors and none-color, that counteract the forms that were originally depicted by Merian and that allowed the viewer the understanding of the animals and plants. By doing so, he not only counteracts the whole idea of knowledge through images and visualization, but he also turns around this approach into an approach that makes us see and understand what is possible with and in painting: depiction, allusion on the side of “contents”. And – on the formal side – different ways of applying color (the color is mostly dotted, as if it was a digital process, dot-by-dot, not applied with a broad and fast brush): plane colors (actually, we should rather talk about the non-colors black and white), mixed greys that have been created by pushing – with the dotting brush – one color in the other, and – occasionally – pencil lines that outline what can (but not necessarily has to) be filled with color. While Huemer is performing his artistic strategy in small-, mid-, and large-scale paintings in oil on (mostly) canvas, he is also doing works that are painted in oil on wood in a series that he calls "Thumbnail"-paintings. They are always measuring either 13 x 9 x 3 cm or 9 x 13 x 3 cm and thus have the format of the thumbnails in our computers. These thumbnails are painted after larger paintings, as if they were small copies of these. However, they are not just the same work, only (much) smaller, but they are - comparable to thumbnails in the digital world - different images that resemble the originals. Accordingly, the titles of these thumbnails are following the file-names of the digital files of the larger works. And these file-names follow the ASCII-code, are thus not longer than 26 characters, do not contain special characters, and are machine-readable. Often, as in the case of "WYSIWYGEditorenHTMLA" these titles are directly referring to digital programs.
