Circle of Maarten de Vos, Christ Mocked

16th Century

About the Item

Workshop of Maarten de Vos (Antwerp, 1532 - December 4, 1603) Christ mocked Oil on panel, 63 x 50 cm Framed, 80 x 100 cm The artist responsible for the execution of this painting was certainly inspired by the painting of the great Flemish masters of the 17th century, with particular reference to Maarten de Voss. The Antwerp-born painter, trained first at his father's workshop and later under the tutelage of the celebrated Frans Hals and Frans Floris, around the middle of the 16th century sojourned in Italy, stopping in Florence, Rome and Venice and even attending Tintoretto's workshop. The visual imagery and intense, vibrant colors of Venetian painting strongly affected him and clearly conditioned his later pictorial production: the works of his early maturity are distinguished by warm, intense tones and monumental figures. Following the fruitful Italian sojourn, de Vos returned to Antwerp and opened a workshop attended by numerous pupils. After the "Italian" period, the following production became increasingly academic and Mannerist, as is evident in several historical-religious paintings, including The Marriage at Cana, The Triumph of Christ, The Last Judgment, Ecce Homo and Stories of Rebecca. The artist who executed this painting inherited the iconography of the mocked Christ from de Vos: the Antwerp-born master elaborated this particular iconographic model probably drawing inspiration from a Durerian engraving of 1509-1510, currently in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum in London. De Vos's invention would have an extraordinary visual fortune in seventeenth-century Flanders, as is evidenced by various prints and engravings, including those by Hieronymus Wierix and Jan Collaert currently in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. On a technical level, the painter executing this painting seems to look not only to de Vos but also to the other famous artist of seventeenth-century Flanders, Frans Francken II (Antwerp, 1581 - 1642): indeed, the light highlights on the faces of the characters and armor, which are canonical in his paintings, seem to be taken from his works; another datum recovered from Francken's works is the presence of the small dog in the center of the scene, which is also found in two of the master's best-known masterpieces, The Seven Works of Mercy in the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin and the Prisoner Jesus in the Prado Museum.

An Architectural Capriccio with the Preaching of an Apostle
By Giovanni Paolo Panini
Located in New York, NY
Provenance: Santambrogio Antichità, Milan; sold, 2007 to: Filippo Pernisa, Milan; by whom sold, 2010, to: Private Collection, Melide, Switzerland De Primi Fine Art, Lugano, Switzerland; from whom acquired, 2011 by: Private Collection, Connecticut (2011-present) Literature: Ferdinando Arisi, “Ancora sui dipinti giovanili del Panini,” Strenna Piacentina (Piacenza, 2009): pp. 48, 57, 65, fig. 31, as by Panini Ferdinando Arisi, “Panini o Ghisolfi o Carlieri? A proposito dei dipinti giovanili,” Strenna Piacentina, (Piacenza, 2010), pp. 100, 105, 116, fig. 101, as an early work by Panini, a variant of Panini’s painting in the Museo Cristiano, Esztergom, Hungary. This architectural capriccio is one of the earliest paintings by Giovanni Paolo Panini, the preeminent painter of vedute and capricci in 18th-century Rome. The attribution to Panini has been endorsed by Ferdinando Arisi, and a recent cleaning of the painting revealed the artist’s signature in the lower right. Like many of his fellow painters working in Rome during his day, Panini was not a native of the Eternal City. He first trained as a painter and stage designer in his hometown of Piacenza and moved to Rome at the age of 20 in November 1711 to study figure painting. Panini joined the workshop of Benedetto Luti (1666-1724) and from 1712 was living on the Piazza Farnese. Panini, like many before and after him, was spellbound by Rome and its classical past. He remained in the city for the rest of his career, specializing in depicting Rome’s most important monuments, as well as creating picturesque scenes like this one that evoked the city’s ancient splendor. The 18th century art historian Lione Pascoli, who likely knew Panini personally, records in his 1730 biography of the artist that when Panini came to Rome, he was already “an excellent master and a distinguished painter of perspective, landscape, and architecture.” Panini’s earliest works from this period still show the evidence of his artistic formation in Piacenza, especially the influence of the view painter Giovanni Ghisolfi (1623-1683). However, they were also clearly shaped by his contact in Rome with the architectural capricci of Alberto Carlieri...
