From Macauley Norman's solo exhibition, CRYPTIC CLUTTER, "Alex and the Mawangdui Daoyin Tu" is a serene figurative, still life painting made with oil, acrylic and thread on canvas. The piece features a beautiful rendering of the ancient Mawangdui Daoyin Tu* scroll painting that shows the practical poses of Daoyin, an early precursor of Qi Gong, practiced in Taoist monasteries to cultivate spiritual and energetic balance and physical health. A young man sits contemplatively in the foreground. Beautiful pastel colors, including yellow, pink, blue, green, peach, gray, lavender, white and black.
*The Daoyin tu is translated as the "Guiding and Pulling Chart," originally excavated in 1973 from the Mawangdui Tomb 3 in the former kingdom of Changsha and modern day Hunan Province, China. The Mawangdui Tomb 3 was sealed in 168BC.
