About the Item
Dialogue with Nature #20 is a unique painting by contemporary artist Maho Maeda. This painting is made with acrylic, coloured pencil and ink on canvas, dimensions are 25 × 25 cm (9.8 × 9.8 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Maho Maeda’s artistic practice centers on an intimate dialogue with nature—particularly its sounds. Beginning with careful observation of the natural world, she asks: what sounds define nature, and how can those ephemeral, invisible vibrations be translated into visual form? This inquiry lies at the heart of her work.
In her compositions, sonic traces take shape as dynamic lines that ripple, shift direction, fracture, or dissolve. These fluid gestures move across one or multiple surfaces, creating rhythmic, almost musical arrangements imbued with both energy and delicacy. There is a palpable tension between control and spontaneity, resulting in works that feel both structured and alive.
Complementing these lines are abstract forms and motifs—suggestive of leaves, bird wings, buds, and other organic elements. Yet Maeda’s pieces are not literal depictions of the natural world. Instead, they are deeply personal interpretations: visual transcriptions of soundscapes, captured and crystallized in paint and paper.
Her work invites viewers into a multisensory experience—one that transcends visual aesthetics to hint at the echoes and silences of nature. By giving sound a physical presence, Maeda explores the invisible rhythms that shape the living world, proposing a new way to see—and hear—nature.
Maho Maeda is a Japanese artist who lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico. Her research, which centres on nature and its sounds, takes shape in harmonious pictorial compositions from which emerge both strength and poetry. In her works, the sound traces are transformed into lines that move, change direction, transform and break. Abstract shapes and patterns complement the paintings, evoking natural elements such as leaves, bird wings and buds. The artist combines several materials in her work, such as acrylic paint, oil, ink and pencil, and uses a variety of media, such as canvas, wood and fabric. “Living beings, non-living things, everything has its own ‘history’ and eventually disappears. [...] The histories of each of them is immeasurable. I close my eyes, and then I ponder and evoke them.”

BIOGRAPHY OF JEAN FRANCOIS DEBONGNIE
Jean-Francois Debongnie, born 1968, a native of Brussels, has been resident in Singapore since 1989. Trained as a photographer then a self-taught painter, Jean-Francois favors large canvases on which he explores the themes that inspire him in series such as “Red flowers”, “Summer”, “Dancing in the wind” and “Landscape – China”.
In all these series Jean-Francois brings to life flowers – both as iconographic floral signatures which capture the essential qualities of a flower rather than strict botanical representations and as part of a landscape in fields growing wild...
