Majio
Being Walked

2017

About the Item

With pets sometimes it is hard to tell who is walking whom. Acrylic paint on small canvas depicts the individual presence of animals, strongly influenced by the enchanted land of New Mexico. Animal iconography is woven deeply throughout three diverse cultures-native, Anglo and Spanish. Majio has for many decades made yearly painting trips and extended retreats to the triangle between Sante Fe, Taos and Abiquiu. Her animal depictions not only reflect stories but are also enhanced by how people there embody the land and wildlife. Her intimate connection to the cultural traditions of the Pueblo Indians, descents from 15th century Spanish and Anglos who offer a rich diversity, if not an uneasy community relationship. The sensitivity to animal and their stories is contagious, even to the many visitors.

Small Wooden Pieces I: Tango Dolly Dingle Series: Dolly with Three Dots
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Although Majio makes no conscious effort to make Japanese art her apprenticeships in ceramics, papermaking and the cultural arts show up unbidden. Gold is often the empty space that suggests and/or conceals. The juxtaposition of incongruent things invites in story and poetry rather than contractions. The spirit of Majio’s aikido practice was alive much later in dancing Argentine tango, which is present in the small gold icon pieces of tango paper dolls. In Dolly with Three Dots, gold metallic paint on wood surrounds the embrace of Argentine street tango dancers witnessed by an innocent girl-child from the 1920s. It highlights a gap in time and culture. In one country this dance is common, while in another perplexing. The figures have paper doll tabs to suggests their enigmatic juxtaposition is in the context of social practicing like many children's toys and yet the innuendo of an adult dance is beyond the child's world. The Dolly Dingles doll...

Acrylic paint on paper Hand-signed by the artist Unique work THE THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS OF MOHAMMAD ARIYAEI " Gentleness and oriental wisdom follow the supercharged bubbling to which we were accustomed from the previous deliberately art brut exhibition by Mohammad ARIYAEI. The Iranian painter's imagination moves serenely from the wildest frenzy to the meditative calm of great, fabulous stories. The artist then took pleasure in pouring the volcanic torrent of his barbaric figures onto the delicate latticework with which he is accustomed to lining his backgrounds with the patience of an illuminating monk. Already sweetness and paroxysm coexisted. Now gentleness wins. The trained imagination of the painter, yet spontaneously bubbling, by instinct as much as by erudition, has no difficulty in reconnecting with the abundant oriental tradition of the thousand and one nights, which, like a long underground river, resurfaces at the light of his painting. Spring renewal of traditions still alive. Systematic filling of space, a sort of oriental version of the Riches Heures...
