About the Item

Layers of Reality Series acknowledges the layers of reality created by our perceptions in the practice of dropping down beneath what we perceive as the reality into another stream of information. It is a simple inquiry to invite a new perspective as feeling tones and images to seek other meaning and insight. The approach and use of materials is a way to invite in this shift. Layers of tissue paper laminated with cold wax give a sense of seeing into layers. There is pattern paper, rubbings, stencil markings and monoprints which have a freedom of spontaneity that invites in chance and random accidents. This Layers of Reality Series began with the Monk and Plumbline paintings arising from synchronistic events suggesting how the monastic practice can be experienced everywhere. The six large stand paintings bared the fruit of the early experimentation each opening to distinct ways of sensing into another layer of reality. This first reality was an acrylic painting to honor the ancestors and their unknown influences. Repeated shapes in energetic patterns began to form a dancing figure who I soon recognized as Kokopelli, the humpbacked flute player emerged, a deity revered in some Southwestern Native American cultures. Kokopelli is the spirit of music, filled with robust trickery which aligns with my experience of the ancestors who often are mischievous with their information.
