Majio
Small Wooden Pieces I: Diptych: Dolly with Film and Dolly with Fan

2019

About the Item

On raw wood panels gold paint introduces this series of vintage paper dolls in a particular way. They are honored as they conceal parts of the narrative. Paper dolls appear throughout the world as a plaything for children and also ritually as symbolism. In this piece Dolly Dingle had been cutout from the Sunday paper by my mother as a child. It was cheap and harmless entertainment except for the subtle social conditioning. The message for girls was to become women yet keep a wholesome childlike innocence. In this diptych odds trinkles and a slice of film suggest connotations inviting participation of the viewer Although Majio makes no conscious effort to make Japanese art her apprenticeships in ceramics, papermaking and the cultural arts show up unbidden. Gold is often the empty space that suggests and/or conceals. The juxtaposition of incongruent things invites in story and poetry rather than contractions. The spirit of Majio’s aikido practice was alive much later in dancing Argentine tango, which is present in the small gold icon pieces of tango paper dolls.

Small Wooden Pieces I: Tango Dolly Dingle Series: Dolly with Three Dots
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Although Majio makes no conscious effort to make Japanese art her apprenticeships in ceramics, papermaking and the cultural arts show up unbidden. In Dolly with Three Dots, gold metallic paint on wood surrounds the embrace of Argentine street tango dancers witnessed by an innocent girl-child from the 1920s. It highlights a gap in time and culture. In one country this dance is common, while in another perplexing. The figures have paper doll tabs to suggests their enigmatic juxtaposition is in the context of social practicing like many children's toys and yet the innuendo of an adult dance is beyond the child's world. The Dolly Dingles doll...

Pipe Dreams: African American collage painting w/ photographs figures, objects
By Richard J. Watson

This is an abstract collage / painting created from acrylic and found objects. It is framed in a wide, dark wooden frame with gold accents. It includes several manipulated historic photograph of figures in many guises, arranged as if on stage. It is signed and dated by the artist lower left. PROVENANCE: Exhibited in "Portals + Revelations: Richard J. Watson," the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Oct 2021 - Mar 2022. "Most of my works are supported by memories of the past and suggested realities. Issues of social politics, ancestral references, and astral projections are presented with fragmented elements of 'real life' collaged and collapsed, as dreams are prone to do. If connections are made, all the better. I feel that life should remind us of our dreams." - Richard J. Watson Richard J. Watson is an icon in the Philadelphia art world. Much of his work relates to his experiences as a Black African American man. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1968), has taught at his alma mater, and has served in the Exhibitions Department at the African American Museum in Philadelphia since the 1980s. He has been exhibiting his work for decades, and has an extensive bibliography.
