Small Wooden Pieces I: Tango and Dolly Dingle Series: Dolly with Diamonds

2019

About the Item

Like an icon, gold paint on wood of seemingly contradictory images of passionate tango and the gaze of a girl-child. Images in art evoke stories linking together the in a-casual ways to stretch us beyond the familiar narrative. One part of this narrative is Argentine street tango, a complex improvised dance, suggestive and sensual, originally with political and class connotations that demands subtle communication between partners. Juxtaposed is a paper doll from the 1930’s, Dolly Dingle, who witnesses the embrace in wonder. The couple in the tango embrace also have the paper dolls tabs suggesting another level of stylization or codification. The diamond or rhombus shape from the Greek word rhombos, means to spin. Although Majio makes no conscious effort to make Japanese art her apprenticeships in ceramics, papermaking and the cultural arts show up unbidden. Gold is often the empty space that suggests and/or conceals. The juxtaposition of incongruent things invites in story and poetry rather than contractions. The spirit of Majio’s aikido practice was alive much later in dancing Argentine tango, which is present in the small gold icon pieces of tango paper dolls.

In Dolly with Three Dots, gold metallic paint on wood surrounds the embrace of Argentine street tango dancers witnessed by an innocent girl-child from the 1920s. It highlights a gap in time and culture. In one country this dance is common, while in another perplexing. The figures have paper doll tabs to suggests their enigmatic juxtaposition is in the context of social practicing like many children's toys and yet the innuendo of an adult dance is beyond the child's world. The Dolly Dingles doll...
