About the Item

Nude Cowboy and His Guitar - Figurative Abstract on Paper A bright abstract figurative painting by Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947), in which a man plays his guitar in nothing but his cowboy boots and a hat shading his eyes. His skin is painted in shades of brown and beige with a coat of shimmering paint on top, giving a subtle sparkle to the painting. He sits on a cobblestone wall with shapes of contrasting yellow and varying hues of green in the background. Image is unsigned but from a portfolio collection of Grant's work. Presented in a mustard yellow mat. Mat size: 30"H x 24"W Image size: 24"H x 19"W Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947) is an artist from San Diego, CA who began showing his art at 13 years old. This led to becoming San Diego Museum’s Art Guild’s youngest member. He attended San Francisco State University in 1965, to study printmaking under John Ihle and Dennis Beal. Throughout college, Marc taught silk screening classes in his Potero Hill painting studio and worked at Museum West—an arm of New York Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Later he became the Display Director at Design Research International. He later attended the Brighton School of Art and Design in England for graduate work in printmaking. In 1973, Marc joined his wife Jeanne’s fledging dress business. The couple moved the enterprise from England, back to San Francisco where they opened their first shop, “Jeanne-Marc”, in North Beach. Under the same label they sold their small sportswear collection to high-end specialty stores, including I. Magnin, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman as well as to stores in Europe and Japan. In 1991, both Marc and Jeanne were elected to the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America). Exhibitions and Awards: 1969, First Prize - the James D. Phelan Award for Graphics 1970, First Prize - New Paltz Intercollegiate Print Exhibition “Haircut? Yes, Please” - Victoria and Albert Museum (permanent collection) 1992 - Absolute Vodka’s Golden Shears Award for Fashion Design
