About the Item

This captivating 1945 oil painting by acclaimed American artist Hayes Lyon beautifully portrays Bessy Lyon, the artist’s wife, in a warm and intimate composition. Rendered in soft yet vivid tones, the portrait exudes a timeless elegance and emotional depth, showcasing Lyon’s mastery of both color and form. The painting is housed in a classic wood frame, with outer dimensions measuring 35 ¼ x 29 ¼ x 1 ¾ inches and an image size of 30 x 24 inches—perfectly sized to command attention in any refined art collection. About the Artist: Hayes Lyon (1901–1987) was a prominent American artist celebrated for his evocative depictions of the Rocky Mountain landscape and Southwestern scenes. Born in Athol, Kansas, Lyon moved to Colorado in the 1920s, where he refined his artistic skills at the Chappell School of Art in Denver and the University of Denver. His early work drew inspiration from the rich cultural and natural environment of New Mexico and Colorado. Lyon’s diverse career spanned several decades and styles, including murals, landscapes, and figurative art. Influenced by his wartime experiences in Europe, where he encountered masters like Giorgio de Chirico and Diego Rivera, his style evolved toward abstraction in later years. He was an active participant in the WPA’s Colorado Art Project and exhibited widely, including at the Denver Art Museum. His works are part of prestigious collections at institutions such as the Denver Art Museum, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, and Fort Lupton Library, cementing his legacy in American art history.
