Margherita Leoni
Pink Brasilian botanical watercolor by contemporary Margherita Leoni

2017

About the Item

Margherita Leoni lived in Brazil for 12 years. There she produced a lot of works en plein aire including Ipe Roxo. Her great aesthetic ability alongside her scientific rigour brought her to collaborate with Sao Paulo University’s botanical sciences department for years. Ipe Roxo is a watercolor painting on Arches paper. It was then stretched on a canvas for better preservation as well as for making it easier to hang. She mastered big-size watercolors. Margherita Leoni was born and raised in Italy, however, she spent most of her adult life in San Paulo, Brazil. It was there that she started a collaboration with the botanical faculty of the local university, allowing her to developed an interesting research in rare botanical species studies and drawings. For this reason, most of her artworks, including the one presented here, illustrate Brasilian botanical species, both rare and common. The artist's mastery of watercolor allows her to take part in botanical expeditions where she paints in plein air. Given her exquisite watercolor technique and her extensive botanical knowledge Margherita Leoni is considered the heir of Margaret Mee. Among her most important exhibitions, three of her artworks were selected by Shirley Sherwood for the Kew Garden exhibition in 2014 (London, Botanical artists of the third millennium, 2014). Furthermore, in 2016 her artworks were exhibited at Renzo Piano's Museum, MUSE, where she was protagonist of a solo temporary exhibition. She is going to move back to Italy this year, where she is represented by Salamon Fine Art. The artwork is strechted and ready to be hung, unframed. Pink, Brasil, vertical, paper, romantic, flower.

Drawing size: 50 x 37.5 cm Paper size: 74 x 58 cm Sara Menon was born in 1985 in Palmanova and lives and works in Aquileia, in the province of Udine. She specialized in the restoration of paintings and wooden sculptures in Mantua, a profession she still pursues today, while continuing to experiment with other art forms such as painting, sculpture and illustration. Her passion and activity as a naturalistic and scientific illustrator began in 2002, when she collaborated with medical examiner Gianpiero Ceci, producing a series of anatomical-surgical plates to accompany her publications, mainly related to the field of obstetrics and gynecology. In 2010, through the European Institute of Design in Milan, she had the opportunity to meet and get to know the illustrator Massimo Demma, who allowed her to refine the method and painting techniques used in scientific investigation and the rendering of natural data, as well as further knowledge in the field of naturalistic illustration. She had the opportunity to publish some naturalistic plates for the publishing house Il Prato...

  • Mighty oak on a gold-leaf background by Italian botanical artist
    By Margherita Leoni
    Located in Milan, IT
The artist has an elegant mark of nature, and the experience of working en plein air allows her to capture emotions that would otherwise not be possible. She is considered Italy's best botanical artist and collaborates with many botanical gardens where she also holds watercolour courses, a technique she masters like few contemporary artists. The artist herself prepared the background in real, stainless gold, which gives it a modern, warm surface that chameleonically matches the colours of the surrounding walls.
