MARIO DAVINI (Lucca, 1876 - Gattaiola, 1951) New York, Broadway Theatre, the Great White Way, 1914 Oil on canvas 112,5x143,5 cm ( with frame 134x164,5 cm) Sined and dated lower right "M Davini 914" Art critic, writer and publicist, he was born in Lucca on 24 January 1876 to the architect-sculptor Pietro Davini and Giulia Parenti, and spent his life between the town residence in via S. Andrea and the family villa in Gattaiola. He attended the Institute of Fine Arts in Lucca, where he was a pupil of Michele Marcucci. He obtained the license with honors in 1900, presenting a work entitled "Claustral Peace", which was selected the following year by the Tuscany Jury for the Fine Arts exhibition in Munich. Later another painting by him, entitled "Interior" or "Choir", was sent in December 1901 to the Petersburg Fine Arts Exhibition. He continued his studies graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and completing his training in the studio of Edoardo Gelli, at least starting from 1905. He participated in numerous exhibitions in various Italian cities: in Genoa, Milan, Montecatini Terme and at annual exhibitions at the Promotrice of Florence. In 1908 he took part in the exhibition organized at the botanical garden of Lucca, which brought together mainly local sculptors and painters, including Petroni, Chelini, Lippi, Marchetti, Carrara, Ricci, Cheli, Carlesi. On 1 September 1908 he embarked for New York, where he remained for 16 months, working tirelessly and achieving moderate success as a portraitist of high society characters; at the same time he collaborates with the newspapers il Telegrafo and il Progresso as a publicist. During the months he spent overseas, he also experimented with symbolic subjects (see "The Sphinx"), landscape (parks and neighborhoods of the metropolis) and with a social background ("Triptych of New York"). In 1910 he returned to Italy, where he resumed painting at full speed. Later he participates in the First World War, enlisting as an infantry lieutenant. At the end of the war he increases his exhibition activity, participating in numerous reviews (Florence, Venice, Viareggio, Forte dei Marmi). This painting, dated 1914, bears witness to a second stay in New York, the duration of which is unknown. In 1921 he set up his first personal exhibition at his studio in Via S. Andrea, obtaining the consent of the critics and the city's artistic environment. In the same period he became a Franciscan tertiary, created numerous works of a sacred nature and collaborated with numerous literary magazines of a religious nature. Starting from 1925, under the impetus of Lorenzo Viani, he began to practice xylography, a technique he used to illustrate his publications and for which he would also later collect the greatest and unanimous appreciation (among others, those of Pliny Nomellini). The artist's incessant research activity received its consecration in the exhibition set up at the Albergo Universo from 1 to 15 June 1940. Following this Davini retired in the following years in rigorous isolation dedicating himself to pictorial and literary activity, sparing no criticisms of the regime and ecclesiastical institutions in his writings. He died in his villa in Gattaiola on October 23, 1951. The work is in excellent condition The frame in which it is presented is made by our craftsmen.
