Marjorie Wallace (Scottish / South African, 1925–2005)
The Trapeze Artists
Signed ‘WALLACE’ (lower left)
Oil on canvas
25 ½ x 32 in. (64.7 x 81.2 cm)
A striking example of Marjorie Wallace’s bold, expressive style, The Trapeze Artists captures both the dynamism and delicacy of circus performance. Wallace, born in Scotland and later based in South Africa, is celebrated for her richly textured canvases that often explore themes of movement, community, and theatricality.
Wallace studied at the Edinburgh College of Art before relocating to South Africa in the mid-20th century, where she became part of the influential artistic circle that included painters and writers associated with District Six in Cape Town. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major collections, admired for its vivid colour palette and emotional intensity.
