About the Item

Artist Comments
Artist Mark Cudd reflects on his experiences from 1998–1999 through his ongoing series of expressive portraits and symbolic imagery. This piece offers a window into memory and emotion, using a striking palette of black and white with yellow-and-red flowers to punctuate the narrative.

About the Artist
Artist Mark Cudd creates monochromatic portraits that explore the emotional layers of memory and the human experience. “My work should remind you of something,” says Mark. His paintings often stir a quiet sense of nostalgia, aiming to establish a dialogue based on common experiences, fears, ideas, and memories. Primarily self-taught, Mark draws from 20th-century photography—old family albums, found images, and his own snapshots—to shape stories that feel both familiar and imagined. His process blends multiple techniques and styles within a single image, giving each piece a distinct rhythm and psychological depth.
