About the Item
Martryce Roach is a self-taught visual artist from New Brunswick, NJ, who introduced her work in 2014. Martryce incorporates elements of music, education, geometric shapes, and environment to construct surrealistic art stories that speak to human experiences and relationships, particularly as they relate to African American culture. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health and Africana Studies and a Master’s Degree in Social Work, the context for a lot of this artist’s work is shaped by her passion for helping people.
In 2022, Martryce was awarded a Fellowship Grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In 2023 Martryce was an Artist-In-Residence for ArtCrawl Harlem on Governor's Island, NY. Every year, the artist participates in public art initiatives that transform public spaces into beautiful places where people passing by can learn about a wide array of social challenges. Her pastel drawing, Facing the Future Together, was licensed by Newark Liberty International Airport and a massive, mural-sized image of it was displayed digitally in Terminal A from 2022 through 2023. Martryce is currently the Public Art and Community Engagement Mural Ambassador for a 240 ft project being installed at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital this October. She will also be installing a PSEG Legends Way mural this fall in Irvington, NJ, to honor the legacy of Lebby Jones.
Martryce’s work was acquired into the permanent collection of The Colored Girls Museum in Philadelphia, PA, and has been exhibited at a number of galleries and other museums around the United States of America. Her work is also sold at art fundraisers, where generous portions of those proceeds benefit efforts of providing financial assistance to marginalized communities and talented Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) underrepresented in business and medicine.
Martryce Roach creates to inspire social change. She is an advocate and an artist.
Martryce Roach Says of her work…
I create vibrant landscapes layered with geometric shapes, architecture, and figures. It’s like visual jazz. Recently, I have become deeply inspired by how elements of our environments shape us. My latest work explores the intersection between physical space and human behavior. To me, life is filled with twists, blocks, turns and waves. How we swerve through those changes tells a powerful story and makes for a magical visual.

“Good artists borrow. Great artists steal.” A quote oft attributed to various sources that was never actually uttered by any of them. Though Mark Twain elaborated on the sentiment: “Ninety-nine parts of all things that proceed from the intellect are plagiarisms.” In the Framed Series, I use my 1% contribution to combine issues of consumption with my autobiography.
I paint copies of copies of paintings within paintings to reference the appropriation, commodification, and altered continuum of art. My paintings of paintings are based on photographs of originals to perpetuate the continual distillation of form, given the ease with which images are presently exchanged and modified. Further, by reducing historically significant paintings to framed objects hanging on walls, I augment art as a commodity and reconcile the conflict between the artificially assigned monetary value of artworks with the reality that they are simply swirls of paint. In this way, I am also acknowledging the literality of my own work.
I have also altered each copied painting to personalize the context of the pieces and address specific autobiographical ideas. These ideas relate to a range of both recent and distant experiences, both funny and sad.
Although my initial renderings are digital image composites, my medium of choice is oil paint, applied in transparent layers, using the image on the computer screen as a reference. In addition to its lush visual properties, I enjoy the flexibility of oil paint in making acute renderings as well as the evolution of the imagery from paint to digital and back to paint in further protracting both the distillation and evolution of form.

John-Herbert was born in Miami and moved to New York city when he was 3 years old. As the son of a Filipno mother and bi-racial father, his multi-cultural roots at first felt like a challenge but with time, and especially through his creative explorations, he would create his own unique world. This would immerse into his work; containing multiple points of views. Inspirations from Basquiat to Van Gogh, Monet to Dali and Matisse; John-Herbert developed a Neo-Expressionist approach infused with surrealism, figurative, and abstract renderings.
From the tender age of eight, Wright gravitated to painting as an escape expressing a rich inner world. His work heavily relies upon dark figurations amongst an urban landscape leaving the viewer space to navigate the world he creates. An analogy of the human condition; centering the female nude/mother and child as the protagonist, he tells the story of the broken seeking respite, the downcast, the other.
Wright seeks to illuminate the universe of darkness within all of us, within himself, and that darkness contrasted with fragility has always been at the epicenter of his work.
Wright has managed to create a niche for himself as a painter and street-wear designer, contributing to the role the graphic t-shirt played in disseminating New York street culture across the globe. Transferring the techniques of garment making onto his canvases, Wright’s paintings feature backdrops of multiple layers of silk-screened images, drawings and text. He has also expanded his avenues of expression, creating installations and even multi-sensory exhibitions, building even more detailed spaces to travel with him through.
Although his success has been celebrated, in many ways till recently, Wright has also kept his own story on fade. This changed last year with his highly lauded solo show “Rewind & Reflect” (at the Blue Gallery...
