Mary Amanda Lewis
Allegorical Hunters & Gatherers Diptych

c. 1920s - 1930s

About the Item

From early 20th-century landscape and still-life painter Mary Amanda Lewis comes two beautifully rendered oil on board paintings depicting the early life of hunters and gatherers. Presented in a diptych, one frame shows four men quietly stalking through the forest with bows and arrows while seeking out their prey. The other displays a group of women wading through field and forest with jugs balanced on top of their heads as they gather water and food from the local wild flora. Both paintings are presented in a beautiful art deco display with gold mat and housed behind glass in vintage bronze painted and carved wood frames. They make for a subtle yet elegant display. Only one of these paintings is signed by the artist - M.A. Lewis appears in the bottom left corner of "The Hunters." • La Vie D'Hiver
    By Maurice Milliere
    Located in Minneapolis, MN
An original gouache cover illustration for a 1928 issue of the notorious French publication La Vie Parisienne. The long running, humorous, and racy magazine chronicled the exploits and sexual proclivities of sassy and free spirited French follies showgirls and their often dim witted suitors in risque, breezy, spicy pulp-like fashion. Maurice Milliere was a frequent contributor, fans on both sides of the Atlantic were familiar with the adventures of this delightful bobbed hair cover girl "Fanny" who appeared in a variety of humorous and or scandalous poses. This original gouache painting is nicely double matted in an oval window in a fine ornate gold gallery frame behind glass. Maurice Milliere (1871 -1946) was a prolific French illustrator, artist, designer and etcher. He was a key figure in what has come to be regarded as "Boudoir Art," and an influence on later artists like Louis Icart. Born in Normandy, France, Maurice Millière began his art education in Le Havre, but was soon transferred to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Arts Décoratifs in Paris where he was a classmate of Toulouse-Lautrec and Raoul Dufy among others. His skill as a draftsman translated quickly into success as an illustrator and his brilliant interpretation of the "Modern Parisienne" soon became known as the "Petite femme...

  • Mechanical Bird and Nude
    By Mahlon Blaine
    Located in Minneapolis, MN
In the late 1930s, avant-garde illustrator Mahlon Blaine, working under the pseudonym G. Christopher Hudson created a series of illustrations which were intended to become murals for the studio or showroom of noted New York City interior designer Paul MacAlister. Offering a dark and pessimistically erotic commentary on the skyscraper landscape that was taking over Manhattan, it's unclear if Blaine and MacAlister believed these murals would ever be approved, or if the preliminary artworks were exclusively created as an oblique social satire. Blaine treated each individual painting in the series as its own completed stand alone artwork, with painstaking detail and inspired yet terrifying imagery. It's unlikely Blaine or MacAlister ever truly expected the murals to be completed, they never were, and by 1940 the following year Blaine was under psychiatric care and dropped completely out of the public eye for the better part of the decade. This is the sixth of the series - We are offering the complete series of ten original concept paintings, each an impressionistic story of a nude underworld goddess engaged in the horrific industry of the machine age. In this work, a mechanical bird...
