About the Item
"In the world of still life and landscape, conceptual events meet one another – the structural meets the narrative, the small stands in the space of the large, and color has a chance to navigate these meetings, changing everything. All my paintings show this shifting world." - Mary Vernon
Born in Southern New Mexico, educated at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, Mary Vernon has served on the faculty of Southern Methodist University in Dallas since 1967. She teaches painting and drawing, and SMU’s noted color theory course. Vernon has chaired both the Division of Art and the Division of Art History. She was named the Meadows Foundation Distinguished Teaching Professor for 1998-1999, and in 2006, she was named Altschuler Distinguished Teaching Fellow. Additionally, Vernon is a Fellow at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. Her work has been exhibited in France, Hungary, Slovenia, Kazakhstan and Chile, as well as nationally. Recent writing about her work can be found in the Kevin Kaiser essay “Still Life with Landscape: The Art and Philosophy of Mary Vernon,” in The Langdon Review of The Arts in Texas, Volume 11, 2014 -2015.

The Masque of Comus

"My work principally consists of deeply abstracted figure compositions--intuitive constructions that begin with random marks establishing larger masses of torsos, heads, and limbs in an undefined setting. The emphasis is almost purely on intuition. The figures are born of their surrounding environment, emerging only partially and fugitively from the layers of pigment.
A narrative is evident but never overt. A crown, a shield, a boat, a wheel. Though the subject has recently coalesced around my reading of Dante and Shakespeare, the settings remain extremely vague- a beach, an interior, a woodland. The paintings are, in the end, meditations on the relationship between the protagonists in a wordless drama. In my paintings, I use a cold wax medium combined with dry pigments, oil paint, and embedded fragments of burlap. The surfaces eventually build up into a dense, rugged terrain."

Located in Burlingame, CA
David Shevlino female figures beautifully link traditional representation with abstraction. Through Shevlino’s sensuous application of paint, his use of broad brushstrokes followed by a tightening up of the composition, and his making of spontaneous, gestural marks, the artist creates living, breathing figures that not only stand before us, but move, beckon, and dance.
