About the Item
Maura Petersen (American, born 1956)
"Horse and Woman" 2024
Acrylic Paint, Canvas, Stretcher Bars
The artist signed the back of the painting.
In "Horse and Woman", Maura Petersen captures a moment of profound connection between the human form and the natural world. The figures—both woman and horse—are rendered in bold, unconventional hues, where blues, greens, and purples dominate, shifting the focus from realistic representation to emotional resonance. The woman stands still, facing the horse, yet her form seems to blend seamlessly into the landscape, as if she too is becoming part of the environment, existing in harmony with the animal.
The untraditional use of color removes the figures from a specific time or place, emphasizing their raw presence and shared energy. The horse, as an extension of the landscape, becomes an almost symbolic presence—powerful, free, and unbounded by form or structure. Meanwhile, the woman, though similarly abstracted, exudes a quiet confidence, her stance firm yet calm, as if rooted in a moment of silent understanding.

Later on in her career, Maura engaged in intensive study from 2017 to 2021 at Monterey Peninsula College and Cabrillo College, focusing on Color Theory, figure drawing/painting, and Design. Her mentorship under Claire Thorson and her father helped refine her technique, focusing on contrasts in values, saturation, and spatial dynamics. Maura’s artistic medium of choice includes oils for expansive, free-form subject matter and acrylics for structured, prismatic motifs. Her works explore the interaction of the human figure with both natural and constructed environments, capturing the contrasts of light and shadow and the interplay of forms.
