Mendel Samayoa is a Guatemalan Artist who is known for his layers of color and texture. Samayoa creates this visual texture by using a variety of mixed media and being very generous in the use of oil.
With his Textile Series, Samayoa challenged himself to do the opposite and work on a different surface. He carefully chose his textile selecting only the hand woven work by well-known textile designer, Mitch Denburg. From the beginning, Samayoa wanted to respect the texture and patterns already present in textile and work with it to create stories that would transform into an entirely new piece of art. Never the same fabric which requires him to change his approach each time. As a result, the Textile Series is unique from the rest of artist's work.
Samayoa’s work is driven by his background in film-making, theater and architecture. His brushstrokes bend light into shadows while creating a stage for the canvas to come alive. There is musicality and performance in his work, at times a serene melody and others a darker deeper base.

Mendel Samayoa and his family discovered his artistic skills at a very young age. His dad was a cartoonist and although Samayoa was encouraged to pursue his passion, he was required to obtain a formal education in a more practical field. He continued architecture degree for many years while he organized his own artwork exhibits throughout Guatemala. Eventually, he moved to Chile to pursue his artistic career full-time as a filmmaker and visual artist. During his extended time in Chile, Mendel explored new visual expressions and started experimenting with acrylic, oil and ink.
In 2000, Mendel returned to Guatemala and established a combined practice including film-making, visual arts and theater. He settled in Antigua Guatemala where he also collaborated with other artists to form the region’s first cooperative, CAOS now known as the CAOS Galleria. The venue allowed Mendel more frequent exhibits and provided for a wider exposure throughout Guatemala City, Quetzaltenango, Antigua, and Sololá. The added exposure initiating a series of international shows in France, Honduras, USA and UK. During this time, he obtained his graduate degree in Architecture as a goal he had always wanted to obtain.
Today, Mendel Samayoa continues his work as a visual artist incorporating the disciplines of film making, architecture, theater and photography into all his pieces.
