About the Item

"Inner Spectrum" is a striking portrait by French contemporary artist Natalya Mougenot, part of her ongoing series devoted to the human figure — men and women depicted not as social identities, but as emotional beings in a constant state of tension between strength, fragility, and transformation. Through this series, Mougenot explores the invisible distance between who we truly are and the roles we perform in order to exist and succeed in modern society. The face is split into contrasting chromatic zones of warm ochre and vivid red, a visual metaphor for inner duality — the intimate self and the public persona. The closed eyes suggest withdrawal, introspection, and silent resistance, while the bold black contours structure the figure with almost architectural force. The electrifying chartreuse background acts not as scenery, but as an emotional field, radiating psychological intensity around the figure. Natalya Mougenot’s practice is rooted in what she describes as an instinctive and metamodern sensibility — a movement between sincerity and consciousness, between vulnerability and strength. “I believe in honesty in art,” she states. “For me, painting is not about decoration, but about truth. If I lie in my painting, I betray myself.” This philosophy drives her rejection of perfection and fixed narratives, favoring emotional accuracy over aesthetic comfort. Color is central to her language, not as ornament, but as psychological force. “Bright colors are my way of speaking,” she explains. “They are alive. They influence our body, our breath, our emotions. I want my colors to touch people physically, to give energy, hope, light.” Her choice of intense tones is deliberate: she seeks a vibrational impact on the viewer, using color as a conduit for transformation rather than representation. Her working process is deeply intuitive and spontaneous. Mougenot avoids preliminary sketches and strict planning, allowing the image to emerge from an inner dialogue. “I never impose a rigid plan,” she says. “If I control everything, the painting dies. I need to listen to what appears on the canvas in the moment. This is where the truth happens. "For her, this immediacy is essential: it preserves the authenticity of emotion and prevents the work from becoming intellectualized or distant." - Natalya adds. Influenced by Vincent van Gogh’s emotional urgency, Paul Cézanne’s structural vision, and Henri Matisse’s liberation of color, Mougenot has forged a singular voice. Rather than imitation, she absorbs their spirit — intensity, construction, and chromatic freedom — and translates them into a contemporary, psychologically charged visual language that is unmistakably her own. At the core of "Inner Spectrum" lies her central belief: “Every human being has a silent core — a true inner identity that we often hide to survive.” This painting becomes a visual revelation of that hidden core, a portrait not of a face, but of a state of being, suspended between exposure and protection, softness and resilience. The work stands as an intimate psychological landscape, inviting the viewer not to observe, but to recognize themselves within it. Her multicultural background and personal experience inform her bold, expressive works, which have found homes in private collections around the world. Natalya’s distinctive visual language blends Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Naïf, and Art Brut—resulting in paintings that are raw, instinctive, and emotionally resonant. Across her work, three values guide her: authenticity, sincerity, and honesty.
