Marzena Ślusarczyk
AT THE BEACH - Modern Women Portrait, Contemporary Figurative Painting

2015

About the Item

The patient waiting for Bresson's “decisive moment” characterizes the pictures of the young Polish painter Marzena Slusarczyk. The compositions of her works have the magic of a successful photography. Often with a powerful neckline, they use expressive foreshortened perspectives and unusual versions and they take us into an intimate dimension of the women portrayed. However, Slusarczyk's pictures are mainly emotions captured on canvas, and this is what makes her works so special. The women she paints perform normal, banal activities in everyday life. But they are the key to reading the feelings of the female figures lost in thought. The lack of clarity in the artist's pictures allows the viewer to make their own interpretations. As the painter herself emphasizes, the aim of playing with the audience is to awaken the viewer's imagination and imagination so that they notice the seemingly invisible. This mystery and the unspoken are reminiscent of the paintings by Michelangelo Caravaggio. Like him, Slusarczyk pays particular attention to the expression of the hands in her pictures; if they are more exposed, they increase the expression of the painted picture. In one of the paintings by the painter, we are dealing with a trick that Caravaggio often uses: showing the figure with the back to the viewer. At the side we only see the profile of a hair-covered face and hands. The finger of one hand points to the open palm of the other. The vague, almost abstract form of the background is also reminiscent of the Pope's former favorite painter and does not compete with the subject matter of the picture. It's like a stage where the actor is most important. Because its shape exposes the light, the origin of which is not visible in the picture. This maneuver is what unites Slusarczyk's pictures with Caravaggio's pictures, as well as with the aesthetics of a photograph. In Slusarczyk's painting we also notice the joie de vivre of the Dutch masters of the XVI. and XVII. Century. The way the color is applied is reminiscent of the expression of a Frans Hals, who, unlike Caravaggio, did not touch the brushstrokes. The artist also associates Dutch art with a prop that often appears in her pictures. It is a goblet with red wine - the symbol of love, as well as a visible invitation to enjoy the pleasant side of life, because life itself cannot be grasped, just like the emotions painted by Marzena Slusarczyk Marzena Ślusarczyk is born in 1976. In the period 1997-2003 Studied Painting and Graphic Arts Academy in Gdansk completed with a degree with honors from the studio of prof. Mieczysław Olszewski. Received a certification in Painting and Stained Glass Art under guidance of prof. Andrzej Dyakowski. In 2001/2002, received the scholarship from the Mayor of Gdansk. Finalist of the “Picture of the year 2003” and XXIII Festival of Polish Contemporary Painting, Szczecin 2010. Her works are in private collections in Poland and abroad. The main focus of the artist’s work is a man, his relationship to himself/herself and the reality around. She lives and works in Gdansk. The message of painting by Marzena is so considerate and almost whispering. Marzena Ślusarczyk’s paintings are not narratives. Do not tell the stories. This is a visualization of certain emotional states expressed by certain form. Sophisticated composition, skillful asset gradation, amazing colors, unusual light, coming as if from inside the images, all of this is a tasty morsel for every connoisseur of good painting.
