About the Item
Acrylic on black paper showing the death of an individual, most likely the artist himself. The lead figure top right is his wife Irene. This is one of the artist's last paintings as his death would come in 1984. Signed lower right and dated 1982. Provenance: Estate of the artist.
Nahum Tschacbasov painted for over 50 years and lived and worked from his home and studio located in the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. He began his art studies in Paris in the early 1930's with Georges Rouault and Fernand Leger. Tschacbasov has four solo shows with ACA Gallery in the 1940's and from 1945 to 1948 with Perl's Gallery in New York City. Later in his career he exhibited his paintings at John Heller Gallery, also located in New York City. In 2013, a retrospective of his work was shown at the National Arts Club in New York City sponsored in part by the Russian American Foundation.
Nahum Tschacbasov's paintings are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Pennsylvania Museum, as well as many university and corporate collections. Nahum a Tschacbasov died in 1984 at the age of 84.
