Original oil on canvas painting by the well known Russian/American artist, Nahum Tschacbasov.. Signed top left by the artist and dated 1975. Condition is very good. Presently unframed. Framing options are available. Provenance: Estate of Leonard Barton, the stepson of Nahum Tschacbasov.
Nahum Tschacbasov
American, 1899 - 1984
Nahum Tschabasov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1899. In 1907 Tschachbasov emigrated to Chicago with his family. He studied electrical engineering and business, but his first love was painting. In the 1930s, he moved to New York and then Paris for further study. He studied with Marcel Gromaire and Fernand Leger. In 1934, Tschabasov exhibited at Galerie Zak in Paris and the Salon des Tuileries. Back in New York in 1935, Tschabasov worked for the WPA Federal Arts Project Easel Division. He exhibited at Montross and ACA Galleries in New York and exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The National Academy of Design in New York, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia and the Art Institute of Chicago, among other important venues. In the mid-1940s, he began teaching at the Art Student’s League in New York. During his lifetime, he also wrote numerous books and articles on art. At the age of 85, Tschabasov died in New York City.
