About the Item

“Currency #271” from Natasha Lelenco’s ongoing Currencies series presents a monochrome black portrait against a vivid cobalt blue background, its surface punctuated by irregular red markings and small circular insets resembling mechanical rivets or coded symbols. Executed in acrylic on a 26 cm diameter round wooden panel, the work is encircled by an inscription in red script that has been deliberately obscured, referring to the loss of comprehension experienced by migrants when confronting a new world—one in which they must relearn how to speak, to read, and, ultimately, to be. The portrait’s shadowed tonality and layered interventions suggest a figure in transition, navigating between the known and the unknown, between visibility and erasure. The coin format—traditionally a bearer of official emblems—is here reimagined as a space for anonymous self-representation, where the act of obscuring language becomes a metaphor for displacement, adaptation, and the reconstruction of identity. Like all works in Currencies, this piece carries a unique, arbitrarily assigned monetary value certified on the reverse, underscoring the disconnect between intrinsic worth and market-assigned price—a conceptual parallel to the inequities shaping human life valuation across borders and social hierarchies. These works can be displayed individually or as part of expansive modular installations. The artist offers site-specific commissions and maintains a significant number of pieces from the series ready for acquisition. For information about assembling multi-piece panels, please contact us to discuss pricing, availability, and custom configurations. As an additional conceptual gesture, collectors may exchange the equivalent value of the artist’s share from the sale for a future work of her own authorship. Though more than 200 pieces have entered collections, this possibility remains open, inviting ongoing engagement with the project over time. At Casa das Peritas Gallery, we operate globally with the same attention and proximity we extend to our local neighbors. We oversee every detail and guide you through the purchase process with the utmost professionalism, ensuring complete satisfaction for each client, whom we regard as valued members of our community. As a small, specialist gallery driven by a deep commitment to art, we carefully select every artist and artwork, presenting our curated collection to an international audience from our corner of the Galician coast.
